Dean Sheila Hudson Inducted into

Track & Field Hall of Fame

Dr. Sheila Hudson, Dean, School of Health Sciences, was inducted into the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Athlete Hall of Fame last week.

The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) interviewed Dr. Hudson for the Collegiate Track & Field/Cross Country Athlete Hall of Fame event.

"The induction of Dean Sheila Hudson into the Collegiate Hall of Fame at the Hull Center, University of Oregon, was a momentous occasion. It honored a dozen legends of Track and Field, each of whom shared their remarkable personal journeys," said Erik Visser, SCC Athletics Director. "The common virtues among these world-class athletes included perseverance, self-discipline, grit, and the ability to overcome adversity. It is a great source of pride for Solano College to have Dean Sheila Hudson included in this distinguished group."

"I appreciate all the wonderful support from Solano," said Hudson.

Congratulations, Dr. Hudson!

Fall 2023 Transfer Fair

On Tuesday, September 19th the Fall 2023 Transfer Fair was held in the 1400 building. We had 29 different colleges and universities represented from California State Universities and Universities of California, as well as private and out-of-state colleges and universities. We also had a representative for the Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) Transfer Guarantee program. All of the feedback thus far has been positive, and we look forward to hosting the event again.

A huge thanks goes out to: Robin Sloan for coordinating and overseeing the event; Narisa Orosco-Woolworth and Kelvin Cheah for representing SCC Counseling; the faculty who encouraged students to attend (and even walked their classes over!); our amazing facilities staff for setting up the space; and to the campus as a whole for your support. We look forward to the next transfer event!

Demystifying the Banner SaaS Project: Banner 101

From Jon Cornelison:

Many of you may have heard of our Banner SaaS project that is currently underway and wondering, what this project is all about. What’s the big deal and why are we even doing it? By all measures, this is a colossal project. It will cost well over seven figures to implement, take more than 5,000 hours of

collective time to complete and will require not only changes to our business processes but new approaches to many essential services such as a replacement for My Solano, Canvas integration as well as how we create accounts for students.

I thought it would be beneficial to build campus awareness regarding this project so that everyone would have an overall understanding of its long-term value to the college. This article is the first of a series of articles that I will publish throughout the semester to help build awareness.

Banner is a commercial ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) system designed for higher education. In other words, it’s a software suite that runs the day-to-day business activities of our college. From course registration for our students to paying our employees, this software does it all. Here is a quick overview of

the core Banner functions:

Banner and Colleague are software offerings from a company named Ellucian. While most CCCs in California use Banner or Colleague to run operations, a few large districts use other ERPs such as Workday or Oracle PeopleSoft.

Banner was first implemented at Solano College in 2008 and is hosted (physically resides) on campus in our central data center. Currently, Banner has many “tentacles,” i.e., other software that integrates or communicates with Banner via a myriad of technical methods.

In the next article, I will discuss what Banner SaaS is and the vision behind it.

Automotive Tech Program Hosts Career Fair

ATEC hosted a career fair and its semi-annual advisory meeting on September 19.

The advisory committee mentioned the desperate need to introduce an auto body program back to SCC. The demand for automotive paint and body technicians is just as large as the demand for repair technicians. Both the auto body program and the technician program went idle over a decade ago, and SCC’s current automotive technician program has consistently been highly successful, connecting graduates with a multitude of opportunities with their newfound skillsets.

40+ advisory members and employers were present at the hiring event. Students from all disciplines were invited, although the event was catered to automotive/mechanical career opportunities. Two students had on-the-spot interviews with transportation companies. SolTrans, TransDev, Tesla, Ford, NAPA Auto Parts, Amerit Fleet Solutions, Toyota, and William’s Transmissions had a presence at the event. Williams’ Transmissions is a shop in Napa owned by a graduate of the ATEC program.

Library Now Has Audiobooks

The library is excited to debut a new audiobook collection, available at https://solano.boundless.baker-taylor.com/ . This is a brand new service, so we look forward to your feedback and input (particularly if there are access issues, or title requests!)

This audiobook collection currently has 61 titles centered around DEI/Diversity, Equity & Inclusion topics and the library will continue to add titles across a variety of topics/disciplines as we are able, so please submit your title requests

Below is a screenshot of the landing page of the collection. From off campus, you will be asked to submit your MySolano credentials to be able to check out and listen to books; on campus access is a combination of library card/MySolano credentials. (We are still working to make this as seamless as possible, so stay tuned for changes or reach out to Erin Duane for support!)  Smartphone apps are available as well. Each book is one-user-at-a-time (ie: not ideally shared in Canvas for multiple students), so if the book you want is already checked out, please join its waitlist (see the screenshot below). Waitlist numbers are great data to tell us we need multiple copies!

SCC Celebrates National Dance Day

SCC Dance celebrated National Dance Day on September 16th. Established in 2010 by American Dance Movement co-founder, Nigel Lythgoe, and Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton, National Dance Day is an annual celebration dedicated to dance, that encourages Americans of all ages to incorporate dance into their lives. By creating a focused day of celebration to show support for dance as a valuable form of exercise and of artistic expression, American Dance Movement aims to educate the public about dance and its many benefits, as well as make dance accessible and inclusive to everyone.”

Dance is a great way to get moving and stay healthy, so we are proud to present this year’s routine. The routine is meant to be inclusive and accessible for all (dancers and non-dancers of all ages and skill levels) so please translate the routine as necessary and have fun.

Check out the Official National Dance Day routine for 2023 that was choreographed by World of Dance Finalist and YouTube Sensation, Poppin John!

Assessing Our Trees' Wellness

A certified arborist was invited on to the Fairfield campus to assess the Italian Stone Pine trees on the west side of Building 1500. They were asked to assess the condition of those next to the one that fell unexpectedly recently, which are all of the same species (the tree that fell is identified as #1 in the map below). Though not in imminent danger, due to the location of tree #2 and #3, it is being recommended that these two trees be removed as well. There is another Italian Stone Pine, identified as #4, but recommendations for this tree are to prune and trim branches for balance, but does not need to be removed. Removal of tree #1 is tentatively scheduled soon, and the removal of tree #2 and #3 will be scheduled shortly thereafter.

Former SCC Coach Passes Away

SCC former basketball coach, Sherman "Jerry" Miller, recently passed away at the age of 82.

After 3 years as an assistant coach at University of Pacific and then another two years at Sonoma State University, Coach took over as the head basketball coach at Solano Community College in 1990. Solano had been absent of a basketball program for 8 years and Coach quickly built it into a top program highlighted by winning the school's first ever league title in 1997, earning 8 State Playoff appearances and helping send 30+ players to four-year colleges. In 2003, after 40 years of coaching, Jerry Miller retired with over 600 wins, 10 league titles and thousands of lives impacted. Coach would always claim that he "never worked a day in his life", yet no one poured more into and had more pride in what they did than him.

Jerry was a proud member of multiple athletic Hall of Fame's including, Chico State, Liberty Union High School, Solano College as well as the Northern California Sports Association Hall of Fame.

Memorial Service to Celebrate the Life of Jerry Miller will be held at St. Mary's College (Soda Activity Center), Moraga, CA on Sunday October 29th from 1:00pm - 4:00pm. The family asks that any donations be made to: Liberty High School Basketball Program (libertybasketball@hotmail.com).
