About The SSC

What Is the SSC?

The Student Success Center is a resource for current students majoring in the Dodge Family College of Arts and Sciences. The SSC prepares students for lives of professional accomplishment, civic engagement, personal fulfillment and lifelong learning, and helps to ensure that financial and logistical barriers never stand between students and their goals. The SSC can assist students with the following: general questions, academic success strategies, finding campus involvement opportunities, major/internship/career exploration and planning, navigating campus resources, student advocacy, etc. Additionally, various events promoted and/or sponsored by the SSC are held throughout the academic year. You can find more information here.

Student Success Spotlight

My name is Lili Hill and I am a junior majoring in history and minoring in political science.

I won a summer scholarship to study abroad in Israel through the Schusterman Center for Judaic and Israel Studies within the Dodge Family College of Arts and Sciences. I applied to this specific study abroad program because of Professor Rhona Seidelman. Professor Seidelman teaches a class on Modern Israel and Jerusalem where she gives her students insight into the history of Israel. In Professor Seidelman’s class, I have gained an intense love, a profound respect and a sincere interest in Israel. I felt that my work in her class was appreciated and I was encouraged to apply to study abroad in Israel.

During this trip I am most excited to meet people, make new friends, learn about Israeli culture and dynamics, see the sights and try new foods.

As someone who has struggled with severe social anxiety my entire life, making friends and going to places on my own or with people I do not know very well has always been a huge struggle. I know traveling to a different country on my own will be challenging, but I believe it is the perfect decision for me to overcome my fear of social interaction.

I hope to return home as a new and more confident person thanks to my experiences in Israel.

CAS Department Spotlight

Each month the SSC will highlight a different department within the Dodge Family College of Arts and Sciences to help bring attention to interesting programs and exciting class offerings for students. This month we have chosen to highlight the Latinx Studies Program. Read below to learn more about this groundbreaking program from director Robert Con-Davis Undiano.

The OU Latinx Studies Program is the first of its kind within the state of Oklahoma. It is an interdisciplinary exploration of the world through the lens of Latinx culture with a wide range of offerings across the social sciences, humanities, history and the arts. The program strongly emphasizes community service and cultural engagement and has a strong tradition of viewing knowledge and learning as a means by which to fundamentally improve the world.

A major and/or minor in Latinx Studies prepares students to step into prominent roles within a wide range of industries including education, law, policy, politics and health care.

As director of the Latinx program I strongly believe that "..no one wins, unless everyone wins," and that unique perspective is reflected throughout the structure of the program.

I want to encourage interested students to consider enrolling in English 2273 Introduction Literary to Analysis or History 2573 Introduction to Historical Analysis. Both courses will be offered in fall 2023 and are fundamental intro courses to Latinx Studies. We will also offer a Latinx Studies Club, Latinx Reading Group and a mentoring course for Latinx students new to campus in the upcoming fall. For more information about these programs, please email rcdavis@ou.edu.
