KING'S BIRTHDAY & HOLIDAY
Officially. Dr. King was born on January 15, 1929, in Atlanta. However, the MLK holiday is marked every year on the third Monday in January--January 16th this 2023 year.
The FIGHT For The DREAM:
The fight to make the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. an official holiday took 32 years, due to much campaigning, activism, and guest appearances of celebrities, including Ted Kennedy, Stevie Wonder, the National Football League, and others.
Dr. King's birthday was finally approved as a federal holiday in 1983, and all 50 states made it a state government holiday by 2000.
MULTIPLE PURPOSES:
Today, the King holiday serves multiple purposes:
--It honors the total legacy of Dr. King;
--it focuses on the issue of civil rights;
--highlights the use of nonviolence to promote change; & --calls people together to do public service.
THE KING CENTER
The King Center was established in 1968 by his wife, Coretta Scott King, as "the official, living memorial dedicated to the advancement of the legacy" of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
The King Center is located in the historic Auburn district of Atlanta (449 Auburn Ave. NE. Atlanta, GA 30312), next to his Ebenezer Baptist Church. The King Center has a detailed chronology of how the efforts, which started shortly after Dr. King's death in 1968, were realized eventually.
President Biden Speaks:
President Joe Biden will speak TODAY at Ebenezer Baptist Church, on Dr. King's Birthday, during a special commemorative MLK Service.
