Happy Holidays Everyone!
All we want for Christmas is
... perfect XC ski conditions!! We have the snow and it's looking milder than last year - fingers crossed! We're hoping to see lots of Members and their guests out on the trails over the holidays. Keep an eye on our trail conditions web page for grooming updates. Enjoy the great outdoors whenever you can!
Holiday Hours & Rentals
While our trails are available to Members and day pass holders 24/7, the lodge will operate on modified hours during the holiday season - full details here. Post-ski hot chocolate is back and the fire is usually roaring. Equipment rental hours are also on a special holiday schedule. Book in advance to avoid disappointment.
Banff Mountain Film Festival
The perfect last minute Christmas gift or stocking stuffer! Three different multi film programs running Fri 13th, Sat 14th and Sun 15th January 2023 at Northwestern Polytechnic. All proceeds to Wapiti Nordic so lets try and make it a sell out for all three nights. Tickets and full details here. You won't be disappointed!
Invest in an Adult XC Lesson
Are you lacking confidence on your skis or struggling with your balance or technique? A classic or skate lesson can go a long way to increasing your enjoyment of our beautiful Nordic sport. Check the options and dates including through the holiday season!
Help Wanted - Part Time
Do you know someone with customer service skills who is seeking a part time job? Our Club is looking for paid Lodge Attendants to oversee our rental room, greet visitors and close the lodge on weekends. Details here. If interested email Dallal for more information.
Chicks on Sticks are a go!
The Chicks ladies ski group have been out on the snow for a few evenings now! We have been keeping an eye on Environment Canada's temperature forecast - which sure seems to be up and down lately. We are happy to be getting back to our pre-COVID routine: a great ski followed by cookies and hot chocolate! If you are interested you need to ski at least 3 km comfortably and be a WNSC member. You can either pay your Chicks fee with your Wapiti Nordic membership or bring $17 to your first evening. It's great to be out on the trails again! If you want to join Chicks but need to brush up on your technique first - see the Adult Lesson info above.
Fall 2022 General Meeting
A special "Thank You" to the 30+ people who attended our Fall General Meeting on November 20th - it was great to see such a great turnout of engaged XC folks! The Club's Business Plan has received final edits and is now available on our website. Focus areas for 2023 will be shared in the New Year. Draft Meeting Minutes will be uploaded before month end.
Multi Use Trail Reminder
Snowshoe, hiking and fat bike enthusiasts are reminded to please stick to the official Multi Use trails on the north side (dogs permitted) and south side (no dogs) to avoid the groomed skate and classic trails which are carefully maintained. Check out our trail maps before heading out and / or use a navigation app such as Trailforks or Avenza Maps. As always, we ask that multi use trail users yield to skiers at junctions when crossing dedicated ski trails and try to avoid damaging the XC track set where possible. Thanks in advance for you for your cooperation. Feedback welcome from all trail users.
Bunny & Jackrabbits 2023
Parents who have registered their littles in our popular Bunnyrabbits (4-6 yrs) and Jackrabbits (6-9 yrs) should have received a notification that rental skis are ready for pick up and with other program details. If you did not, please reach out via email ASAP.
Race Team Update
The race team has been busy preparing for Arctic Winter Games trials in Canmore and had an amazing time in the provincial training camp in Tawatinaw. Starting in January the team will be away every weekend racing and representing the ski club all over the province. Please cheer us on as you see them out training! And keep your eyes peeled on the Wapiti Nordic Facebook page for details on the annual New Years Day classic XC ski race.
School Programs @ WNSC
Expecting a quiet day on the trails and you wondered where the kids came from? We have had the pleasure of teaching the Grade 4, 5 and 6 students from the Grande Prairie Public School District Sports Academy this month. It is a real pleasure to see the smiling faces of the students as they experience the joy of cross country skiing
