Strong Communities for Life
Toward a Whole and Just Community for All
At this special time of year – the Jewish High Holiday season – CHAI is pleased to share its Jewish Identity & Values guide, originally showcased at our annual meeting in June 2022. This guide is the result of a deep study of Jewish texts, teachings and traditions that underpin CHAI’s mission. As an agency founded in the Jewish community, CHAI’s work is informed and inspired by Jewish principles, which propel us to do our part to build a healthy society by responding to the needs of the whole community of which we are a part. The experience of the Jewish people throughout our history drives us to work alongside neighbors to create a world in which no one is marginalized or oppressed. Jewish ethics demand that we pursue justice relentlessly until the world is perfected.
A Transformative Day of Learning
Last summer, CHAI held a special day of learning for our board and staff at an event made possible through gifts honoring the memory of Arnold Kohn, a respected and beloved CHAI board member. The Kohn family loved the idea and created a fund to support an annual Arnold Kohn Lay/Pro Day of Learning. The topic of this year’s event, held on September 22, was Park Heights Deep Dive: Past, Present and Future. CHAI staff and board were joined by a wonderful line-up of speakers, including former Housing Commissioner M.J. “Jay” Brodie, Delegate Sandy Rosenberg, Ken Gelula, (CHAI’s founding Executive), community leaders, and representatives from Baltimore City and the Maryland Stadium Authority. The inspiring event presented an important opportunity to look below the surface and gain a deeper understanding of the neighborhood that is home to CHAI and its community-building work.
Village Gathering Hosts Compelling Veteran Reporter
Northwest Neighbors Connecting (NNC) continues to produce dynamic cultural, social and educational programming for its engaged members. After a two-month summer break, NNC members were thrilled to resume their monthly Village Gathering in September at the Edward A. Myerberg Center, particularly as Jayne Miller, the former chief investigative reporter for the WBAL-TV I-Team, was the special guest. Ms. Miller, whose career reporting on the Baltimore metropolitan region spanned more than four decades, spoke candidly to a packed room of NNC and Myerberg members. She shared her thoughts on issues that have impacted the health of Baltimore City, the importance of changing the narrative around Baltimore and her vision for a brighter future. The compelling presentation sparked a lively discussion among all those present.
A Musical Alliance Inspires Meaning at Weinberg Villages
One of the many benefits of residing in a CHAI senior living community is the programming that creates an active and engaged environment. From fall 2021 through summer 2022, the Iris Music Project (IMP) brought an “ensemble-in-residence” to CHAI’s Weinberg Village campus. Community-embedded musicians presented concerts, rehearsed on campus and worked collaboratively with community members on musical projects and individual performances. IMP engaged each of the over 400 residents at the Villages by holding hallway concerts throughout the five buildings. The impact of this program for residents and musicians alike is immeasurable. One resident wrote that IMP “awakened my love for playing music, that I thought was in the past.” CHAI is thrilled to continue this meaningful program for a second year, which began September 2022.
