Looking for owners to help create and manage a Local Farmer/Producer Directory!

We need owners who enjoy making connections with their community to help build an accurate database of local farmers and producers. The goal is to make the database usable as an easy reference for community members now, and to serve as a first contact list for our future General Manager when they are organizing vendor contracts for the future store.

Are you or is someone you know a farmer/producer who would like to be listed on our directory? Can you spare some time to help us create this directory?

Send us an email for info!

Seeking organized individuals who love to see things operate smoothly!

Volunteers are vital to successful co-op development. We need a dedicated owner to take the lead on coordinating event volunteers with help from the owner engagement team. Duties include:

  • managing the volunteer database
  • emailing event details to potential volunteers
  • scheduling volunteer shifts for events or projects

This is a great chance to use your organizational skills and meet other co-op volunteers!

Send us an email for info!

Wishing a warm welcome to our December new owners!

New owners #1011 Sharon & Russ say:

"It is sooo important to have healthy options in our community and a place for people to turn to for ideas and to be able to find other like minded people to help improve our health and well-being."

And we couldn't agree more; we are so happy to have you with us!

Welcome to our newest Director,

Ellen Smilanich!

Please welcome Ellen Smilanich to the Board of Directors!

Ellen applied for a director position outside of our normal election cycle and was appointed to fill a vacant two-year position. We are now up to 8 (out of 9) directors currently on the board! There is still one open two-year director position. If you're interested in joining us, you can apply online now or contact any current director to learn more.

Ellen is passionate about sustainability in general (tree-hugging, driving a 2002 now-rusty Prius, eating organic and locally sourced foods, supporting local businesses and farmers and choosing to live with a community and “we’re all in this together” mindset. She and her husband both grew up in Grand Rapids and recently moved back after living in the cities for 35+ years. One of her favorite activities in the cities was to shop each week at the local co-op because she was able to buy in bulk (i.e. bringing her own containers to reduce packaging and get as much or as little as she wanted), select from healthy and sustainability-oriented products (so she didn’t have to do any research, being much too lazy) and belong to a community of diverse and very interesting people. Not having a local co-op was one of the three key reasons she hesitated before deciding to move back to Grand Rapids. Learning that a co-op was in the works helped a great deal to make the decision to move a much easier one.

Ellen is a lifelong learning and development professional and is looking forward to using her skills and professional experience to help to make this co-op a reality.

Community Investment Campaign Update

We have a lot riding on our upcoming Community Investment Campaign since that’s how we’ll raise the majority of funds to open our store, and we are not taking this task lightly! Our Community Investment Campaign (CIC) Planning Team has been hard at work to prepare and plan for exactly how this campaign will be implemented. They've met twice a month for over a year; one meeting per month with our consultant and one with just the team, to finalize details like:

  • creating volunteer job descriptions & coordination plans
  • outlining and working within a general timeline
  • attending peer group calls and communicating with other co-ops
  • researching data management systems
  • drafting a lengthy 40+ page detailed legal investment memo
  • creating all the necessary marketing materials
  • calculating compensation and writing a detailed job description for a Campaign Coordinator*
  • and lots more!

(*The Campaign Coordinator is different from our Consultant. The Coordinator will be our on-the-ground superstar with experience running fundraising campaigns. If you or someone you know might be interested in this position please reach out and let us know!)

Working only with what resources we have: our professional food co-op campaign consultant Katie Novak, guidance from Food Co-op Initiative, support from other food co-ops, as well as our limited access to a lawyer (legal counsel is expensive…) we are proud to say we are making sustained progress. We are continuing to go forward step by step, and spending hours learning and conducting research as we go.

Creating systems of sovereignty from a little more than two sticks to rub together is hard work… but as the old saying goes: “many hands make light work”. If you’d like to lend us a hand we’d love your help on this team, no legal or fundraising experience necessary- as most of us don’t have that either! We are just folks who care about our community and want to unite under a common cause, to walk through the doors and go grocery shopping in our very own community owned food co-op. Email Casey if you're interested in learning more about the team!

We are excited, but also saddened, to announce that our long-lived chicken logo is getting a makeover this new year! It was not an easy decision to make, but with so many exciting projects happening soon, it was recommended by a local marketing consultant that we design a new logo to better fit our needs for the future and everything that will entail. While the current logo is charming and has served us very well over the last 6 years, it just isn't as user-friendly as it needs to be for the next stages of development.

There is a long list of materials we need to create across multiple types of media, and the new logo will be cleaner and a bit more modern.

Just like the Free Range chicken it embodies, it will be agile and fit for purpose, able to adapt to its surroundings with ease!

Keep your peepers open for our new logo reveal coming soon!

Your donation will go directly to help cover upcoming costs including: Legal services ($5,000 - $10,000), consultant fees ($20,000+), Community Investment Campaign Coordinator ($20,000+), site studies & architect fees for potential sites ($5,000+) and a lot more!

(Please note: donations must be made through one of these two fiscal sponsors; we cannot accept donations mailed to our PO Box.)
