A Year in Review

By Nate Hamme

We’re now firmly in the holiday season—which can be a hectic time, and one that has a way of being emotionally taxing. For many, including the team here at Ceca, it’s their favorite time of year. We start the season by giving thanks—which we strive to do each day in our many partner communities—and at year-end, we attempt a joyous self-reflection on what matters most and who we’d like to be in the year to come.

I’d wager that for most people, 2022 has been a remarkably up-and-down year. It’s particularly true for those in the healthcare world. And it’s certainly true for us at Ceca.

We have been honored to highlight thousands of incredible people and are inspired by their exceptional acts of caregiving. We've also been fortunate to engage with so many dedicated healthcare professionals during our presentations, meetings, and conference tour this year. But, we have also been forced to acknowledge the desperation of healthcare workers and the organizations they work for.

With many care communities just trying to tread water, it hasn’t always meant the kind of growth our team had hoped for when the year began. And when you are working at something so diligently day by day, it’s easy to get the feeling that you haven’t made any progress at all.

But by many measures, we’ve made real progress this year.

We presented more than 200 Ceca Awards, the most in our history. We recognized over 7,000 acts of care, and highlighted people across the continuum who continue to represent the best the industry has to offer.

In the past, we'd ask to attend the occasional conference or convention—if the price was right, or someone would let us sit in for a day. This year, we were invited to give keynote address or presentations, providing breakout sessions for continuing education credits at a dozen conferences. Read more.

Ceca In the News

ABC's WJLA 7 DC Features Ceca and Knollwood

ABC WJLA 7 news in Washington, DC presented a Veteran’s Day special focused on the story of Mary Lawlor and the creation of Ceca Foundation. President Nate Hamme Quoted in i Advance Senior Care Magazine

Ceca President Nate Hamme was quoted in an article for i Advance Senior Care magazine on his thoughts about what healthcare employers can do to boost staff morale. He honed in on the research behind why recognition and acknowledgement of quality work play such a key role in staff morale, and provided several recommendations for how to incorporate it into staffing and company culture at senior care facilities anywhere.

New Partnership in Oceana

Oceana County Press covered the newly launched Ceca Award program with Oceana County Medical Care Facility in Hart, Michigan. The partnership was made possible thanks to a generous grant from the Edward N. and Della L. Thome Memorial Foundation, and in collaboration with the Health Care Association of Michigan. Kory Hansen, Administrator at the facility, was quoted in the article saying, “‘Recognizing caregivers is an important part of our culture and aligns directly with our mission and person-centered care approach… We’re excited to launch the program and start hearing more heartwarming stories of the positive impact our caregivers have on our patients and residents.'”

Program Updates

Recognize a Caregiver for a Chance at $2,500!

Do you know someone who works for a hospital, nursing home, long-term care, hospice or homecare organization who has made a big difference in your life or the life of a loved one this year? We want to share your stories of what exceptional care looks like! Ceca will be presenting $2,500 to the selected Ceca Caregiver of the Year Award recipient, and find ways to ensure everyone you recognize—whether a nurse, doctor, housekeeper, security guard, or other healthcare worker—knows the impact they had. Tell us how they went above and beyond to care for you. We’ll announce the recipient in February 2023.

Ceca on Amazon Smile

Just in time for the holidays, Ceca Foundation is officially on Amazon Smile’s Charity Lists Program, which means you can select Ceca to be your favorite charity. Every time you shop, AmazonSmile will donate 0.5% of your eligible purchases to the charitable organization of your choice. If you already have a Smile Account and want to change the designated charity, just go to smile.amazon.com and select Ceca from the list.

And, during year-end giving this holiday season, we'd be delighted if you keep Ceca Foundation in mind and consider making a donation in honor of a loved one or an exceptional caregiver you know!

Partner and Program Highlights

We’re always thrilled to see our partners having fun with the Ceca Award program and finding new and creative ways to promote it to their staff and residents/patients. In particular, we are moved to see the impact that Lionel Taylor (pictured left) has had in his 2 years at Carroll Manor Nursing Home. He took a Ceca Award program with waning participation and more than doubled engagement by walking around the campus with a cart full of snacks and a laptop to help staff register, raise awareness, and increase recognition. Now the program at Carroll Manor is running flawlessly, and the staff regularly recognize each other and look forward to the upcoming award celebrations.

Another highlight is from Arosa, a homecare partner, which at a recent employee event gave an extra raffle ticket to anyone who had recognized a co-worker on CecaAward.org to increase their chances to win prizes. And finally, we can’t help but smile at the first and very fun award celebration for Tracey Blanding (pictured far right) at Edenwald Senior Living during their Halloween party.

Kudos to our Ceca Partners who continually show commitment to recognizing their staff and encouraging use of the program in innovative ways.
