COMING IN JANUARY: A SPECIAL LECTURE AND DISCUSSION WITH ACCLAIMED HISTORIAN AND AUTHOR SIMON SPALDING ABOUT FOOD ON THE HIGH SEAS

A Unique Opportunity for Active Conservancy Members

As the Conservancy builds on our longstanding curatorial mission and begins the process of advancing on a new, state-of-the-art museum to commemorate the legacy of the SS United States, we are very excited to welcome Simon Spalding, acclaimed historian, musician, and author of Food at Sea: Shipboard Cuisine from Ancient to Modern Times, for a special members-only virtual event.

At 7:00pm ET on Thursday, January 9, 2025, Simon will share his expertise on food served aboard steamships and liners, from P&O steamships to the immigrant trade to the golden age of ocean liners.

During the program, we will also be sharing highlights from the Conservancy's collections of dining artifacts and documents in advance of our forthcoming digital exhibition, “Food Tastes Better at Sea: Food and Dining Aboard the SS United States.”

This presentation is the second installment in the Conservancy’s members-only webinar program, The Allowance List: A Curatorial Conversation Series. Through intimate presentations and discussions, Conservancy members will be given unique insights into interesting (and sometimes surprising!) stories behind the artifacts in the Conservancy's collections, life aboard the Big U, and the fascinating personalities associated with the history of America’s Flagship. Whether you have a direct and intimate connection with the SS United States, or you are curious to discover what all the fuss is about, this series is sure to enrich your understanding of the ship's historic legacy.
