Dobyns Rods News & Updates

Gary's Corner...

September is here and summer temperatures are sliding behind us. Here in Texas, we had brutal summer temps that started in May and stayed hot through July, but August was really mild with mostly high 80’s and low 90’s. September is always a great month. The temps start sliding down, fishing picks up, boat traffic really drops, and hunting seasons start in most areas as well. The kids are back in school after summer vacation and the majority of pleasure boats are put up for the year. Bass fishing starts picking up too. September is a great topwater month and reaction baits of all kinds really start getting bit.

We have launched a new product called a Tip Top Removal Tool. This is a tool designed by Lynn Williams of Williams Custom Rods. We made a few tweaks to it and decided to try and market this tool. We’ve seen many rods over the years that guys have over heated the tip of the blank while changing out the guide. This tool eliminates this from happening. It’s a tool that almost all tackle shops should use when doing repairs. It’s super easy to use. There’s a video link here in the newsletter showing how simple it is to use.

We’ll be launching a new catalog this month. It’ll have all the new products we’ve came out with in the last year.

Just to keep everyone updated. We have a few new rods coming out. There’s a designated A-Rig rod that’ll be in the Champion Series. We’re adding another Bull-Shad swimbait rod that’s 8’3” and a 5 power. We’re also adding a new set of Cull Buoys that are easy to use and operate one handed and will not come off your fish in the live well. This is an 8-pack of buoys so they’ll work well with Crappie events where it’s a 7-fish limit.

September is a great month whether you’re shooting doves or catching bass. Everyone be safe and I’ll see some of you on the water!!!

New Tip Top Removal Tool

Removing a damaged tip top guide can be a pretty simple process, as long as the heat factor stays in a safe range. When that range is no longer safe and gets too hot, you risk damaging the rod blank. We've taken the guess work out of the process and simplified it even more with the new Tip Top Removal Tool.

We worked with Dobyns Rods Pro Staffer Lynn Williams who created this simple and easy-to-use tool for removing those tip top guides for easy replacement.

Vesely & Gauntt Win On Ray Hubbards

Congratulations to the winning team of Adam Vesely & Taylor Gauntt who recently won a Victory Fishing tournament on Ray Hubbard with a massive summertime bag of 31.88lbs, including a 9.9lb kicker caught by Gauntt. Taylor did most of the heavy lifting throwing a shakeyhead on a Champion Extreme HP Series DX 703SF. He credits the rod sensitivity for feeling a bite that came out of +20' and resulted in a big last cull of the day. Adam contributed his fish by throwing a Dobyns Extreme Football Jig in RootBeer/Green Pumpkin Craw color on a Xtasy Series DRX 755C

Looking For A Trip Of A Lifetime?

Panama Is Calling Your Name!

By Pete Robbins via Half Past First Cast

I’d give my left arm — which is, by the way, my casting arm — if I could fish 30 days a year for tuna in Panama. OK, that might be a bit of an exaggeration, but I was serious when I told Hanna that I’d sell my very nice new bass boat if that would give us the time and funds to go down there that much. It’s that amazing. Life changing, even. I don’t know how to convince anyone of that fact except to take them there for the full experience. When your belly is full of sashimi and your arms are like jelly from fighting monstrous, topwater-eating fish (and the only question is whether you should have a second celebratory beer at 8am) you are truly living the good life.

If the paragraph above didn’t convince you of how much I love topwater tuna fishing, the fact that I’m headed back for the third time in less than two years might tell the story better. We’ll be there November 5-11, and there are still TWO SPACES left. You can come as a single, or bring a friend, child, spouse or mistress, it doesn’t matter to us, but we’ve learned that life is better when there’s someone there to relieve you on a 200 pound yellowfin and then share the celebration. Maybe it’s something you’ve never considered, or you think it’s too far, but if you’re reading this newsletter there’s a pretty good chance you’ll love it — and perhaps even become addicted like me. What does it hurt to inquire? Reach out to Hanna via email or call her at (703) 282-2722 to get the skinny. No, it’s not inexpensive, but it’s worth EVERY PENNY.

Dobyns Rods Fan Of The Month

Alex Strunk

Alex Strunk is a collegiate angler for Bowling Green State University, he grew up fishing the Potomac River in his native state of Virginia.  Alex purchased his first Dobyns Champion XP Series

DC 736CB Glass rod to be a chatterbait rod and fell in love!  “I was sold with my first rod. I loved the way the rod loaded up when a fish bit, it helped me get a good hook in them and lose less fish." Alex says "when talking to friends about Dobyns Rods, especially up North, I like to talk about the sensitivity. I love throwing them for smallmouth and being able to feel the bottom as I bring my lure over boulders and grass. They feel good in the hand as well as they do an amazing job at keeping fish pinned!”

Alex’s says his “favorite rod is currently a tossup between the Champion XP Series

DC 736CB Glass for throwing chatterbaits or the Champion XP Series DC 702SF for slinging around a dropshot!”  While Alex fishes a lot of lakes with Bowling Green State University, his dream fishery is both Lake Fork in Texas and Santee Cooper in South Carolina.  If you are on the “Gram” give Alex a follow at alex.strunk.fishing and watch his journey fishing the college trail with MLF and BASS.  Thanks for being a loyal customer and a fan of Dobyns Rods, Alex!
