BIXBY BULLETIN NEWSLETTER

January 2023
Director's Dispatch
Happy New Year! I hope you had an enjoyable holiday with lots of good library books, friends, and family.

Now that we’re in January, are you thinking of making some changes for the new year? Science is behind us in using this time for a fresh start. I’ve enjoyed reading Professor Katy Milkman’s research on what truly works, based on her fascinating research over the years. In “5 Strategies for Nailing Your New Year’s Resolutions,” she reports on her findings that will help us succeed AND have fun in the process.

Or maybe you’re ready to “recharge your emotional batteries” after a tough 2022. The Bixby is here to help!

We’re ordering How to Change to add to our collection, and we have many other books and online resources to support your efforts. Milkman says enlisting friends is a helpful strategy, so feel free to meet up here at the library with your support partner. Enhance a new exercise routine by using your library card to download music, audiobooks, or TV shows to accompany you. Reward yourself by participating in any of the engaging programs you’ll read about below. Or consider volunteering and let us know if you’d like to discuss some creative options.

Good luck, and here’s to flourishing in 2023!

Warmly,

Catharine Hays, Library Director

Join Us at the Bixby's LEGO Robotics Community Day
Do you ever wonder how our community prepares our youth for the future? Come celebrate our newest STEM initiative, LEGO Robotics Club and FIRST LEGO Robotics Team, at the Bixby on Saturday, January 14th, at 1 pm. We invite you to celebrate the fantastic work our LEGO Robotics Teams have done over the past few months in preparation for their competition at Norwich University on January 28th and experience a demo of their robots completing missions coded by the kids themselves.

And if you were inspired by the Community Demo by the LEGO Robotics Teams or building with LEGO and DUPLO during LEGO Club, sign up for the 5th Annual LEGO Contest & Exhibit on Saturday, February 25th
New Local History Exhibits to Explore
Two new exhibits in the Kerr Room offer a glimpse of life in this region more than a century ago. In two cases with an education theme, you can see, for example, the questions teachers had to answer to become certified in 1884 and read excerpts from the diaries a Panton boy wrote in 1881-82. And while you are there, look up at the 1844 map of the US that hung in an Addison school. Another display acquaints you with John Devotion Smith, a man of many talents. He was a farmer, legislator, mayor, postmaster, judge, inventor, and advocate for women's rights decades before women won the right to vote.

The Bixby's Top Books of 2022

Librarian's Corner
Are you planning to start a crafting hobby for your New Year's Resolution? Maybe you have your eye on the Singer Sewing Machine in our Library of Things? Sign up to give someone a handmade craft, and you will get one in return. Check out the details and start brainstorming!

Feel like cooking something you never had before? Consider joining us for our Cook the Book this January 21st. It’s a casual potluck where we discuss recipes and our mutual love for anything delicious. This month we will be enjoying recipes from various African cookbooks.

Youth programming is starting 2023 with a lot of time devoted to LEGO! On the morning of Saturday, January 14th, we will be having our drop-in LEGO & DUPLO time in the Community Room. In the afternoon, come celebrate the amazing work our LEGO Robotics teams have done over the past few months in preparation for their upcoming competition at Norwich University and experience a demo of their robots completing missions coded by the kids themselves. Let them inspire you to enter our 5th Annual LEGO Contest in February! Our Magic the Gathering Club meets weekly on Tuesday nights for our local teens. We are also starting a Teen Advisory Council for teens interested in a community leadership role. Please email me to learn more!

What was your favorite read of 2022? The 7 Husbands of Evelyn Hugo? The Paris Apartment? The Lincoln Highway? Most people are telling me it's hard to choose just one! Think it over and come add to our poster or see what books others have chosen.

We Recommend...
White Horse by Erika T. Wurth
Horror at its finest. A bracelet haunted by her mother's ghost sparks a wild, terrifying journey of self-discovery for Indigenous woman, Kari James. The kind of book you have to keep reading because to put it down might mean facing literal and metaphorical ghosts of your own.

After a long delay, a bunch of new titles have finally arrived on our shelves! Come check them out and be sure to grab a Winter Reading scratch-off to help inspire you. Scratch-offs can be returned at the end of January for a prize!

The Secret Code Inside You by Rajani LaRocca, Steven Salerno (illustrator)
This picture book explains DNA and genetics in an accessible, lyrical tone. For the youngest of children, the illustrations are bright and beautiful with a lyrical voice. For older kids, it is written with easily understandable examples of having similar features within families. The back of the book contains facts for those who want even more information and even a DNA experiment you can do at home with materials you already have.
The Snowshoe Experience by Claire Walter
The cover says it all: "Gear up and discover the wonders of winter on snowshoes. Snowshoeing is your passport to winter enjoyment. No matter what age or fitness level, you can strap on a pair of snowshoes and discover the often-missed beauties of the cold season while becoming healthier, fitter and stronger. With this nuts-and-bolts guide, you have everything you need to know to get started and enjoy this low-cost hassle-free winter sport."

We also have three other books on snowshoeing. The next time it snows, come check out some snowshoes from our Library of Things!
