February 2023

Message from the president:

Happy February everyone! It’s clear that winter has found us at last and as always is keeping things interesting on the east coast. I hope you’re all staying safe and warm during this chilly time.

January brought us time to connect in Nova Scotia and PEI. We were able to tag along on the AFP Fundamentals Road Trip and pay a visit to the Island. Thank you to Liz and Tracey for coordinating and to the Confederation Centre for playing host. This was the first time this course was offered on the Island, and it was so nice to see so many emerging fundraising leaders join us.

We also kicked off 2023 with a networking session at Pier 21. We got to see some brand new and familiar faces! Thank you once again to Glenn Stewardson of the Donor Motivation Program and Elizabeth Newman of RCR for sponsoring and making these opportunities possible. Couldn’t make this one? Not to worry - we have plenty of other chances to connect coming up.

February and March are shaping up to be just as busy! With our recent Young Professionals and Emerging Leaders Happy Hour on February 22 and our session coming up on March 1, 2023 with Harvey MacKinnon, planned giving extraordinaire! Registration is open now and it’s free to attend. If you’re considering a PG program or looking to grow yours, this is the session for you.

Also on March 1, our Mentorship team is hosting a mixer from 4-6 p.m., in-person, at the Middle Spoon in Bedford, if you’re new to the sector or looking to build meaningful connections this a great opportunity to learn more.

In honor of ‘love’ month, I’ll finish my note with a big thank you to all of you! Your support means the world to us and we wouldn’t be able to do any of this work without it. I hope you find some time this month to spend celebrating with the ones you love.

As always if you have any ideas and thoughts for upcoming sessions, networking opportunities or anything, please send us a note: afpnovascotia@gmail.com.

All the best,

AFP Fundamentals of Fundraising Course in Prince Edward Island

At the end of January, the latest offering of the AFP Fundamentals of Fundraising Course was hosted in Prince Edward Island. The course welcomed 12 fundraisers and AFP Nova Scotia’s Alison Clements, President-Elect, was able to pop in for a visit.

Thank you to the Confederation Centre of the Arts for hosting and thank you to Liz LeClair, Tracey Comeau, and Mary-Ellen Davies for helping coordinate and offer this course.

Brightening the Winter Blahs

AFP Nova Scotia was chuffed to bits at the turn out for our Winter Social, presented by The Donor Motivation Program and Glenn Stewardson.

Many thanks to Glenn for his support, enabling us to host such a wonderful gathering. We had over 50 enthusiastic Members and friends come out to enjoy great conversation and delicious appetizers from our Signature Hospitality Sponsor, RCR Hospitality Group. Thank you, Elizabeth Newman and the RCR Team!

We were also grateful to the Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21, and to Rayanne Guidry for providing tours of the Museum’s rental spaces. And thanks to all those who came out on Groundhog Day, despite the dire warnings of six more weeks of winter.

Compensation Survey

Compensation data is crucial for salary negotiations, organizational recruitment and retention, and for promoting equity in fundraising.

That’s why AFP publishes an annual Compensation and Benefits Report, providing members with valuable salary benchmarks, broken down by organizational size and location, and factors such as employee gender and education.

The data for this report comes from YOU, our AFP member community, which is why we encourage our members to participate in this year’s survey.
