How did you first get involved with SCAN?
I was first introduced to SCAN in 2019 when our friends, Seth and Allison Monette, were one of the hosts for the Progressive Dinner. Throughout the interactions leading up to and at the event, I was extremely impressed with the organization, in particular the multiple programs that support SCAN’s mission.
What has your life/work experience been that brought you to SCAN?
I have witnessed family support programs and know how valuable they can be for young children and parents, single and married. As the father of two boys, ages 11 and 9, I think a lot about positive parenting, notably creating an environment that is supportive and enables children to build the resilience needed to face moments of adversity. SCAN offers multiple programs aimed at providing that for children in the Richmond area.
What inspires you to stay involved with SCAN?
To put it simply, it’s hard to imagine a cause more compelling than real and lasting positive change in the life of a child.
Is there anything you wish other people knew about SCAN?
SCAN is of course about supporting children. But the path to that mission comes in many forms. One is providing the resources and education for parents to better recognize ways they can make positive strides to be more supportive and effective in raising their children.
What has been the best experience with SCAN so far?
Definitely the people. Every interaction I have had with a member of SCAN’s staff is impressive and humbling. Across the board, I have found the SCAN team to be deeply compassionate, knowledgeable, thoughtful, and committed.
What are any challenges you have faced in your work with SCAN?
Any time you are dealing with abuse and trauma there are heartbreaking situations with major challenges to provide a long-lasting solution, and that’s especially the case when children are the targets. But that’s also what makes SCAN’s work so vital, including services aimed at treating trauma, stopping a pattern of trauma, and preventing trauma.
Are you involved with any other community organizations, hobbies, or activities?
In addition to SCAN, I sit on the board of Groundwork RVA, an organization that works with local youth to facilitate environmental, economic, and social well-being in Richmond neighborhoods through transforming and greening neglected open spaces into public assets. My family and I are also active members and volunteers at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church.
What might someone be surprised to learn about you?
I’m originally from the Southwestern U.S. My first home was a working cattle ranch my family owned and operated between Denver and Colorado Springs. We moved to Arizona when I was still young, and I spent the rest of my childhood there.
