Celebrating Teaching Excellence: Laura Uribarri and Ginger Raya Win Teaching Innovation Awards

We are delighted to announce that Laura M. Uribarri, PhD, MPAff, and Ginger Raya,EdD, MPA, MS, have been awarded the Teaching Innovation Award for the academic year 2024-2025. This recognition, presented by the Office of Instructional Design (OID), highlights their exceptional efforts to enhance student learning through innovative teaching practices. Laura Uribarri was recognized for her work in PH 3744: Organizational Behavior and Human Resources Management in Healthcare Organizations. Ginger Raya was honored for her work in PH 3747 Healthcare Operations Management course.

Both recipients will collaborate with OID to implement their innovative ideas, ensuring enhanced learning experiences and improved outcomes for students.

Catherine Troisi, PhD, advises on mask usage for voters in Dallas Morning News


Catherine Troisi, PhD, spoke with the Dallas Morning News regarding mask usage during voting. She advised that wearing masks at polling locations is prudent, even without a current respiratory illness surge. Troisi recommends masking for all individuals as a preventive measure, emphasizing the importance of voting even for those who are ill. She suggests voters who are unwell should consider off-peak voting times or request accommodations from election officials.

UTHealth Houston Researchers Secure 5-year $2.5M Grant for Multi-Dimensional Surveillance System Congenital Heart Defect Study



UTHealth Houston School of Public Health researchers have been awarded a $2.5 million CDC grant to establish a comprehensive surveillance system for congenital heart defects (CHD). The project, in collaboration with Baylor College of Medicine, will analyze critical outcomes including mortality, health care disparities, and respiratory virus impacts on CHD. This system aims to be one of the most comprehensive in Texas, capturing diverse population data. The findings are expected to inform more effective CHD management strategies.

UTHealth Houston Study Reveals Impact of Home Health Agency Ownership Changes, led by Yucheng Hou, PhD



Yucheng Hou, PhD, assistant professor at UTHealth Houston, led research on ownership changes in Medicare-certified home health agencies. Published in JAMA Health Forum, the study revealed increased Medicare spending and reduced staffing levels following such changes. While star ratings slightly improved, especially in agencies transitioning to for-profit status, objective quality measures remained stable. These findings align with broader concerns about corporate consolidation's impact on healthcare quality.

CHCD researchers presenter studies at 2024 APHA Conference



Data Scientist Chau Truong presented at the Annual 2024 APHA Conference to discuss “Children with non-specific encephalitis and myelitis require significant inpatient resources,” a collaboration with Baylor College of Medicine and Texas Children’s Hospital. The study aimed to provide more information to epidemiologists, physician-scientists, and clinicians better to better understand the full extent of the disease burden. 

Regina Hansen, Biostatistician, exhibited a poster on the ongoing study evaluating changes in healthcare, social services, and law enforcement utilization before and after enrollment in Project HOMES, a longitudinal evaluation study of level II and III recovery residences for those with opioid use disorder (OUD). Her poster was, titled “Healthcare, law enforcement, and social service utilization before and after enrollment in opioid use recovery residences.”

Christina Solis, Director of IT Governance Data and Privacy, provided an overview of data governance best practices and strategies. In addition, she hosted a compelling dialogue of case studies in which data security was compromised, the steps taken to identify a resolution and a discussion of lessons learned.

CHCD resources for doctoral students Registration open for 2nd Annual Texas Consortium for Nonmedical Drivers of Health Conference



The 2nd Annual Texas Consortium for Nonmedical Drivers of Health Conference is a two-day event from December 5th to 6th at the Rice University Bioscience Research Collaborative. The conference will bring together researchers, policymakers, and other healthcare professionals to discuss advancing research, policies, programs, and more. MPACH faculty and featured speakers include Dr. Cecilia Ganduglia Cazaban and Dr. Robert Morrow.

UTHealth Houston School of Public Health Master's team placed second in Penn State Case Competition



Congratulations to our MPACH master's students under the guidance of Associate Professor Bryan Schneider, DHA, FACHE, FACMPE, secured 2nd place in the Residential Masters category at the 6th Annual Penn State HPA Case Competition. The team, comprising Essence Byrantkendrick, Masroor Habeeb, Nadia Siddiqui, and Erik Wittstadt, demonstrated exceptional skill while competing against 42 teams from 22 universities. This achievement highlights the caliber of our students and the strength of our academic programs.

Fall 2024 Student Evaluations Now Open


Degree-seeking students must complete Fall 2024 evaluations with their faculty advisor by December 13, 2024 (excluding certificate, non-degree, and graduating students). Please bring your evaluation form, degree planner, and grades from myUTH to your advisory meeting. Both student and advisor signatures are required on the completed evaluation form. Submit signed forms to SPHStudentServices@uth.tmc.edu by December 13 to avoid registration holds; visit the Student Evaluation page in mySPH for additional information.
