The Landing School Newsletter

Friends and Family of The Landing School,

As the winter doldrums are upon us, we are all hoping longingly for spring. It's gratifying to see that students are still happily engaged in their various projects. The Wooden Boat students continue to knock down the milestones in the Town Class builds, Marine Systems project boats are well underway and the Yacht Design students now get to try their hand at an aluminum construction powerboat.

In addition, we are pleased to welcome two new members to the team and are happy to have Clint Chase "back in the fold” (sort of). Clint was a 2006 graduate of the Wooden Boat program as well as a previous instructor who now owns and runs Clint Small Craft in Saco. Maine. Clint will be teaching two boatbuilding workshops here at The Landing School this summer! What a great opportunity for beginner boat builders… come build a boat!

Sincerely,

Sean Fawcett, President

Join Clint Chase of Chase Small Craft this summer as he leads two 3-day classes at The Landing School!

BOATBUILDING 101: AN INTRODUCTION TO BOATBUILDING

July 28 - July 30

The Landing School, Arundel, ME

In this 3-day class, Clint Chase will lead you through the essentials of boatbuilding from a complete kit for our Points East Pram. With the precut wood, screws, glue, and tools on hand, you’ll start building at 8am in the morning and finish at 5:30pm. One lucky student may go home with the boat, which will be done on a lottery basis if more than one student is interested. We do offer class extensions for boat finishing and rigging if a student wishes to continue on with us to finish the boat.

Marine Systems

Marine Systems has started reviewing for their upcoming ABYC Marine Systems Exam. This exam is a major part of their grade and the review and preparation process takes many weeks.

This week the students will also start to work on their AC Panels. Installing shore power inlets, battery chargers, outlets, breaker panels and light fixtures. Doing all the wiring themselves, after preparing a wiring diagram to ABYC standards.

After designing and assembling their DC panels in the fall, the AC panels are the next step in their electrical education. The project boats are moving along, and long awaited parts are starting to arrive and get installed. We anticipate having the boats done and back in owners hands for this summer!

Wooden Boat Building

As February goes quickly by, the wooden boat crews have reached another milestone, the Town Class deck frames are complete, fair, and ready for laying the deck. Just when it seemed like the sanding, filling, and coating would never end, the crews (with big smiles) jumped back into woodworking. Laminated deck beams were installed, carlins and carlin blocking were installed, and centerline blocking, including the mast partner, are in place and fair. It is amazing to see the lines of the boat come to life as the actual sheer emerges from the oversized sheer plank and frames present after turning the boat over.

The second semester brings the students into the world of estimating time and materials.

Typically done with a set of plans for the Calypso Dory, this year we have an actual project boat for this part of the curriculum. “Nellie”, a Jimmy Steele Peapod, needs 5 new steam bent frames, a partial plank replacement, re-fastening of the keel, reefing and re-caulking the bottom, and some new paint. The WBB students have calculated the materials needed and will soon be completing time estimates for the work, and then performing the work to get this boat back on the water by July.

Yacht Design

In the Yacht Design course, the students will be finishing their sailboat projects this week. This means that the pilot boat projects are beginning. For the pilot boats, the students will be responsible for the structural design which will conform to ISO standards. Our design students are also preparing individual presentations on a variety of interesting subjects that they have selected in consultation with us.

We are already looking ahead to the spring, when this group of talented students will start designing their own final projects. That promises to be exciting, based on what they’ve produced so far this year!
