Friend or Foe? Anti-CGRP Therapies and the Gastrointestinal Tract

Meenakshi Rao, M.D., Ph.D.

Assistant Professor. Harvard Medical School

Division of Gastroenterology, Department of Pediatrics

Boston Children’s Hospital

Dr. Rao is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Gastroenterology within the Department of Pediatrics at Boston Children’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School. She received her M.D. and her Ph.D. in Neuroscience from Johns Hopkins University, where she uncovered a membrane protein essential for motor neuron differentiation. After clinical training in Pediatric Gastroenterology, she obtained postdoctoral training in glial biology with Gabriel Corfas at the F.M. Kirby Center for Neurobiology and in enteric neurobiology with Michael Gershon at Columbia University. Her postdoctoral work challenged longstanding dogma on glial functions in the enteric nervous system (ENS) and revealed surprising sex differences in ENS circuits. Dr. Rao’s current research program is focused on delineating functional interactions between the ENS, gut microbes and host systems with the goal of identifying cells and signals that can be targeted in the gut nervous system to treat human disease.
