Hello Gerald,

The three decks of Steve McMullin's Carleton Railway are on display in this panorama with Rosedale on the top deck and Big Lake on the bottom.

Join us March 20-23 for NERx

The NMRA Northeastern Region invites you to NERx, a virtual convention being held March 20-23 on YouTube and Facebook. Like last year, NERx will have a program from 6:30-10:30 PM Eastern Time all four evenings.

Each evening will feature clinics, layout tours, Tips 'n Tricks, a Model Showcase, and roundtable discussions. So, circle these dates on your calendar and visit the website at nerx.org to keep up to date.

Now let's highlight a few things coming to NERx!

On the upper level, the community church and parsonage dominate the residential neighbourhood on the west side of Waterville. On the lower level, the large Union Station sits alongside the large yard in Millville. It serves passengers for both the Carleton Railway and the Canadian Pacific Railway.

Steve McMullin's Carleton Railway

The Carleton Railway is a basement-filling HO-scale double-deck (and in some places triple-deck) layout designed for operations.

The era is ca. 1965, and the setting is rural Carleton and York Counties in western New Brunswick. The railway has a 500-foot-long mainline, along with two branch lines. The potato industry is prominent on the layout, as it was in 1960s Carleton County, with lots of potato storage warehouses and farms, a potato chip and potato starch factory, and the world's largest (as far as I know) HO-scale potato field.

The Carleton Railway favours Alco locomotives, although a few F units can be seen at the front of the passenger trains.

Construction of the present layout (the third version of the Carleton Railway) began in 2000, and the scenery is mostly complete. The layout is located in our home in Saint John, NB.

Clouds and Backdrop Trees

by Eric LaLonde

In this clinic, Eric will demonstrate his approach to modeling clouds and background trees on his layout, the HO scale UPRR Geneva Sub.

For clouds, Eric uses a very simple technique that anybody can achieve using three things: Cheap white acrylic craft paint, water, and a sponge.

For trees, Eric matches the colors as closely as possible to the trees he will be using and again, uses only 3 colors of cheap craft paints.

Watch this clinic to see how simple it really is!

Prototyping the Landscape

by Steve Erickson

We work hard to make our railroads look and feel authentic. Prototype accuracy has become much more achievable over the past decades. But what about what is around the trains? How do establish a sense of "place" and time markers that will speak for themselves? This clinic will explore details often overlooked that do just that, and take little time to make. Featuring contrast photos between 1950's landscapes and the present day.
