Family Prayer

Second Sunday of Lent

Reading I : Genesis 12:1-4a

I will make of you a great nation.

  • In the first reading, Abraham is obedient to God’s call.
  • Abraham is blessed by God. Ultimately, blessing is a sharing in the life of God, a sharing in God’s power to bring life and to sustain it.
  • Because of Abraham’s obedience, the inexorable progress of sin and separation is reversed and God’s blessing begins to fill the world.

Reading II : 2 Timothy 1:8b-10

God has called us to a holy life.

  • In 2 Timothy the point is made that through obedience, followers of Jesus will share in the sufferings of Jesus and then come to share forever in his glory.
  • Through his death on the cross, Jesus has conquered death.
  • The final goal of God’s blessing is new life.

Gospel : Matthew 17:1-9

Get up! Do not be afraid!

  • In the Gospel story Jesus leads Peter, James, and John up a high mountain, a favorite place in the Gospel of Matthew for revelation.
  • There, the presence of God shines through Jesus and he is transformed.
  • Moses and Elijah, representatives of the Law and the prophets, appear with Jesus.

A Message from Mr. Oberdorf

Service Hours

Our grade 5-8 students are expected to complete 30 total hours of service over the course of their four years at SJE. The expectation is 5 hours in 5th grade, 5 hours in 6th grade, 10 hours in 7th grade, and 10 hours in 8th grade. If a student started with us after 5th grade the hours are adjusted based on the above numbers. If a student is short in an earlier year the hours may be made up in the later years.

Service hours are not counted until the service hour slip is completed, signed by a leader of the activity, and turned into Mr. Courchane.

Transform your Heart

Our school’s theme for Lent is “Transform Your Heart”, inspired by Romans 12:2, “Do not conform yourselves to this age but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and pleasing and perfect.” Each week, we will focus on one way to transform our heart. Our focus last week was to “Transform gossip into kind words” and this week’s focus is to “Transform complaining into thankfulness.”

As we work to transform our hearts during Lent our bulletin board will also be changing. The bulletin board begins with the things we hope to transform during Lent. As we complete each week’s focus the negative topic will be removed from the board and will be replaced by the replacement positive topic. The heart on the board will slowly transform from a black heart to a red heart and will also transform from negative to positive.

I have included a picture of the board before the start of Lent and a picture of our board as we completed our first “Transform Our Heart” focus. The word gossip has been replaced with a red section showing the words “kind words”.

Volunteer Needed for Athletic Director

SJE is in need of a volunteer to be our new Athletic Director. We currently have teams throughout the school year. Soccer in the fall, volleyball and basketball in the winter, and track and futsal in the spring. The Athletic Director, in conjunction with the athletic board, will take on the responsibility of providing outstanding experiences and opportunities for our SJE student athletes. It is a great opportunity to serve our community and help our children grow. If interested in becoming the Athletic Director, or helping with our athletic program in any way, please contact Mr. Oberdorf either by phone 414-321-8540, email boberdorf@sje.school, or by stopping in the school office.

Thank you for supporting our school.
