OUR MISSION:

To Enrich the Health and Lives

of the People We Serve

The Holton Clinic and OPC staff would like to take a moment to remember Clara Niehues.

We are never prepared to lose a family member and when the loss comes unexpectedly and happens so quickly, it is hard to adjust to the new normal.

If you knew Clara, you knew the following:

  1. Faith and Family were her biggest loves. And she bragged on her kids, grandchildren and great grandchildren every day.
  2. Baking and cooking for others was a close second! She loved to bring soup or a casserole dish for our many Clinic meals and celebrations.
  3. A quiet but witty personality. She was great with a good one liner when you least expected it!
  4. Listened to hear not to respond. She gave great advice on many levels! She was a co-worker, friend, mom and grandmother when needed.
  5. Old School all the way. In how she lived, how she thought and how she worked.
  6. Hardest worker and proud of the work she did each day. Enjoyed completing a task no matter how daunting!
  7. What is a teammate? That would be Clara...always willing to help. Work to cover a shift, trade her 4-day work week to a 5-day work week or take your Saturday if needed. There was no I in her explanation of TEAM.
  8. Birthday Baker Extraordinaire! She would bake our favorites for a co-worker’s birthday or other special occasions. And they were the BEST confections!
  9. No nonsense about how our world needs to change. And she led by example daily.
  10. She will be missed in our hearts and unable to be replaced.

Please take a moment to look in your rear-view mirror to enjoy a memory you may have had with Clara. And be sure to live your life to the fullest, just as she did each-and-every-day.

Our thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends as they continue to grieve and celebrate her in the upcoming Holiday season.

Happy Thanksgiving week!

Heather Myers, APRN has accepted the hospitalist role at the Onaga Hospital.

Heather will fully transition from the Holton Clinic to the hospital/ED on January 8. Heather is originally from Onaga and is looking forward to being closer to family and returning to practice in her hometown.

We will replace Heather's position at the Holton Clinic.

Congratulations, Heather!

Now what should I be thankful for?

Now where do I begin?

Of course the greatest gift of all -

My family and my friends.

But it's also all the little things

That touch my life each day

That I sometimes take for granted

Letting life get in the way.

Like my comfy bed that keeps me warm

As I sleep away the night

And that lovely glowing, smiling sun

That wakes me with her light.

Just lying there and taking time

To hear the world as she awakes.

The peaceful sounds of early morn

That nature starts to make.

The smell of breakfast cooking

My cat entreating me to rise

Breathing in the crisp fall air

And looking up at pillowed skies.

To be blessed with still another day

To laugh and love and live.

To have enough to care for me

And still have plenty more to give.

To smell and hear the rainfall

As it pitter patters from the sky.

To watch a snowy blizzard roar

While sitting safe and warm inside.

To look upon the bluest sea

As the gulls go soaring by.

To feel the salt upon my skin

As I lay beneath the sun to dry.

I'm so grateful that God still allows

Another child to be born

And that He opens up His heavens

To all those loved ones I mourn.

I feel blessed by each new moment.

Another chance to make things right

And for all good people in this world

Who love and give with all their might.

It's important each and every day

To bring all our thanks to mind.

It's tragic we're so lost in life

That we seldom take the time.

But as for me, I plan to make a change.

It's a simple change to make.

To thank God for all my blessings

Every morning when I wake!

Reduce Your Risk from Respiratory Viruses This Holiday Season

Flu, COVID-19, and RSV illnesses are at low levels right now overall in the United States, but we expect them to increase in the coming weeks, as they usually do in fall and winter. We have seen an uptick at St. Marys Manor.

Individuals, families, healthcare providers, and health departments can all take actions to help prevent serious respiratory illnesses.

The most important action is getting the immunizations recommended for you.

If you do get sick, these immunizations can make your illness less severe and can help you avoid hospitalization.

What CDC knows

Signs of increased RSV activity have started in the southern and eastern United States, particularly in young children.

Seasonal flu activity is increasing slightly among children but remains low nationally.

CDC expects hospitalizations for flu and COVID-19 to start increasing in the coming weeks.

Many people have not received their recommended flu, COVID-19, and RSV immunizations.

There's still time to benefit from getting your recommended immunizations to reduce your risk of illness this season, especially severe illness and hospitalization.

For people who do get sick with flu or COVID-19, antiviral medications for each of these illnesses are recommended for people who are at higher risk of severe illness.

What CDC is doing

CDC tracks flu, COVID-19, and RSV activity—for example, emergency department visits and hospitalizations—and shares the data weekly with the public.

CDC's respiratory virus guidance provides practical ways people can lower their risk from respiratory virus illnesses.

CDC provides information about testing and treatment for flu and COVID-19.

CDC works to increase access to vaccines, including administration of the Vaccines for Children program.

Now is the time to take action

While respiratory virus activity is currently at low levels nationally with variability by state, CDC anticipates that will change. Peaks of respiratory disease activity usually happen from about December to February. Several different respiratory viruses spread more during fall and winter, including those that cause flu, COVID-19, and RSV illness.

The holidays are coming, and large gatherings, travel, and more time indoors can mean more viruses spreading. Fortunately, we have tools to help us stay healthy so we can enjoy the time we spend with our families, friends, and neighbors.

Healthcare providers, health departments, and individuals all have a role to play. It is important for healthcare providers to get vaccinated to protect themselves and encourage patients to do the same.

Health departments should monitor local respiratory virus activity and provide information to the public. This includes information about where people can get vaccinated and how to reduce their risk of becoming severely ill. CDC has developed resources for healthcare providers and specific groups of people to help us all prepare for the fall and winter season.

Things everyone can do

Immunizations

Immunizations are the best tools we have for preventing serious illness from flu, COVID-19, and RSV. Staying up to date on recommended immunizations is especially important for those at higher risk of severe illness from respiratory viruses.

Make sure you know which immunizations are recommended for you and make a plan to get them. You can talk to your healthcare provider if you have questions about immunizations.

Testing and treatment

U.S. households are currently eligible to order 4 free COVID-19 tests.

Talk to your healthcare provider about testing and treatment options if you get symptoms of a respiratory illness and are at higher risk of developing severe illness.

Antiviral treatments for COVID-19 and flu can lessen symptoms and shorten the time you are sick.

COVID-19 and flu treatment should be started as soon as possible after symptoms begin.

Everyday prevention steps

You also can protect yourself and others with everyday prevention action such as:

Staying home and away from others when you are sick (including people you live with), covering coughs and sneezes

Improving ventilation and washing hands often.

Learn more about these strategies and others in CDC's respiratory virus guidance.
