and we added free live music and kids activities, too.

What A Time...The Toxaway River Bridge

Most of us cross the bridge over Toxaway Falls without much thought these days.

But just imagine what a game-changer it must have been when the NC State Highway Com-mission built the bridge in 1923!

Since US 64 is the only major east-west road in Transylvania County, the very narrow bridge was a lifeline for the remote traffic in the area.

In 1989, the NC Department of Transportation conducted a feasibility study that reviewed area bridges, including this one, and concluded it had a sufficiency rating of 45.6 out of a possible 100.

A new bridge over Toxaway Falls was constructed to

enhance the view of the falls while preserving the area's natural surroundings, including a massive exposed rock underneath the bridge.

To keep debris from spilling into the massive granite bedrock, the NC Department of Transportation constructed reinforced earth walls on both sides of the highway.

In addition, the department tinted the base of the walls to match the color of the exposed rock.

Metal bar rails were installed along the sides of the bridge to allow for a breathtaking view of the falls.

As longtime local resident Bill McNeely, Jr. , relays in an HTF Voices of Toxaway video interview here (scroll to the bottom of the blog; or read it before you watch!)—

After he helped with the new bridge construction, as well as other local projects, people from the Lake Toxaway Community Center and North Toxaway Baptist Church circulated a petition to name the new bridge after him. He called it "quite an honor." We call it quite appropriate.

Re-Writing Autumn

A SEASON FOR GIVING AND TRANSFORMATION

"Autumn is sometimes seen as a melancholy time. The summer is over, the leaves turn and drop, winter is on the way. Yet it’s also a time of fruit and harvests, glorious colours and mellow days. It’s a time of the light’s balance and of changes, of letting go and transformations."
