A comedy, The Waverly Gallery was a finalist for the 2001 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Gladys, the elderly matriarch of the Green family, has run an art gallery in a small Greenwich Village hotel for many years. The management wants to replace her less-than-thriving gallery with a coffee shop. Always irascible but now increasingly erratic, Gladys is a cause for concern for her daughter, her son-in-law, and her grandson, from whose point of view this poignant memory play is told. A wacky and heartrending look at the effect of senility on a family, The Waverly Gallery was a success at New York's Promenade Theatre, winning an Obie for legendary Eileen Heckart in the role of Gladys. Presented with permission from Concord Theatricals.
Tickets are $18 and available in advance on our website, by calling our box office, or at the door before each performance.

Award-winning and internationally exhibited sculptor and painter Lesa Cook of Burkittsville, MD, will be teaching a series of five, three-hour oil painting classes, âPainting the Portrait on Copperâ for the Valley Art Association, Thursdays, January 12-February 9, 2023, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at The Mansion House Art Center & Gallery, 480 Highland Avenue in Hagerstown City Park.
Cook, who describes herself as an artist as a âclassical realist,â explains that copper as a painting surface was initially used by Italian artists in the 16th century, and then was quickly and widely adopted by other European artists, particularly for smaller work because of the materialâs weight. Using copper as a substrate eventually fell out of favor, but in the last few years there has been a resurgence of interest in using it.
âItâs more durable than wood and canvas, and it lends itself to fine details,â Cook explains. âIt offers the advantage of the paint not "sinking in" or being absorbed by the canvas. It is super stable, and if you paint in thin layers and allow the copper to show through, it can result in creating great luminosity.â
Cook spent two years in the sculpture program at the Florence Academy of Art in Florence, Italy, and is one of a limited number of qualifying National Gallery of Art âmaster copyistsâ who learn from copying the old masters (with stringent safeguards in place to prevent forgeries). She uses those techniques in her own work in a contemporary context while focusing on the psychological aspects of her subjects that she wants to evoke. Her work can be seen at http://www.lesacook.com, on Facebook: www.facebook/lesa.cook.3, Instagram: www.instagram.com/lesacook_art.
The copper portraiture class is recommended for experienced oil painters, as the cost of $230 for the 15-hour class for VAA/Museum of Fine Arts members, or $245 for nonmembers, does not include materials nor the shared professional model fees, which are established on first day of class. To register or for inquiries: email Elaine Wolfe valleyartinfo@gmail.com or call 304-261-9583 (no text)
