Senior newspaper executives: Take our 'Health of Local Newspapers' survey

Senior executives: We need your assistance with a very important project

Please take 10 minutes to take our Health of Local Newspapers survey. The results of this study are critical to America’s Newspapers advocacy efforts in Congress.

https://survey.alchemer-ca.com/s3/50216472/StateofLocalNewspapers

This study will broadly examine the current state of local newspapers and the outlook for the next few years. We are asking you to provide the information for your newspaper, or group of newspapers, to the best of your ability. This is not a deep dive into financials, we are looking for directional information.

As always, time is of the essence. We are having regular discussions with members of the House of Representatives and Senate and would like to provide results as quickly as possible. Please take 10 minutes and answer the survey as soon as you can.

The Medill School of Journalism, Media, Integrated Marketing Communications has welcomed noted Cameroonian journalist and author Haman Mana as a visiting member of the faculty for the 2023-2024 school year.

'Make climate impact part of all beats': Tips from the Sustainable Journalism Partnership for better climate reporting

“Good journalism is about doing compelling stories,” Lars Tallert said last month at the IMEDD International Journalism Forum in Athens, Greece. “We seem to have forgotten that when it comes to climate journalism.”

Tallert is the founder and president of the

Sustainable Journalism Partnership, an initiative that aims to “develop knowledge and practice on how journalism can be made more sustainable and at the same time contribute to a sustainable society: in research, education, business and journalistic practice.”

Part of that means developing business models “that take into account [the] environment and climate change.” Tallert was in conversation with Ornaldo Gjergji, a data journalist for the European Data Journalism Network and a data and policy analyst for the thinktank OBC Transeuropa.

Palestinian journalists facing deadly impact of Gaza conflict

The past seven days have seen the deadliest week for journalists on record. According to the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), 15 colleagues have been killed since the beginning of the Israel-Gaza conflict. Three Israeli journalists were reported murdered in the wave of attacks conducted by Hamas that left over 1,400 people dead, while a Reuters journalist was killed on Friday reporting from southern Lebanon.

However, the overwhelming number of casualties have come from Gaza. Eleven Palestinian journalists are being reported among 2,800 civilian deaths as Israel conducts its military response, with the threat of attacks intensifying.

Working to keep newspaper benefitting unhoused people alive

The editors at Street Spirit, an East Bay newspaper focused on homelessness, are nearly halfway to meeting their fundraising goal to revive the shuttered newspaper.

Bradley Penner, the newest editor of Street Spirit, and Alastair Boone, its outgoing editor, are working on a long-term funding plan for the paper once they secure enough money to relaunch in January.

So far, they’ve raised $100,000 of their $250,000 goal through private donations.

“Part of the work we’re doing now is developing a plan for longevity,” Boone said. “Street Spirit will be viable for decades to come if we succeed in developing a donor base and a long-term business plan.”
