Thinking of you.

Many of you have been impacted by Hurricanes Helene and Milton.

Please know you are in our thoughts. We hope you are safe and well.

WHAT TO DO WITH THREE WEEKS LEFT!!!!!!!

Three weeks! That’s all that is left for this nation to determine if it will protect democracy or accept autocracy. We cannot rely on the courts to protect democracy. We cannot count on “hope” to protect democracy. We can only count on a massive voter turnout to achieve a future that will guarantee our true freedoms. That's our job and our work is far from over.

Yes, voter turnout is essential. It will decide the fate of our nation. For those of us who have worked consistently this past year through donations of time, energy and funds, we are thankful, yet we must do more. For those who may feel you have not done enough, it is not too late. Here are some action steps to consider:

  • Enroll in Vote-By-Mail before 5 pm, Thursday, Oct. 24
  • Double-check your Vote-By-Mail status now
  • Complete & return your Vote-By-Mail ASAP upon receiving it
  • Track your completed ballot online to verify receipt
  • Make sure all your relatives & friends are currently registered to vote
  • Donate money to key races & fundraise – “give ‘til it feels great!”
  • Volunteer for field campaign work – literature drops, calls, texts, postcards
  • Commit to boost turnout & “chase” mail ballots – using your home phone
  • Challenge extremism and lies
  • Submit Letters to the Editor and Opinion Columns
  • Post on social media

Having trouble figuring out what to say to encourage others?

Make it simple.

Floridians for Democracy formed in Spring 2023 due to our concerns that Florida was becoming the “Canary in the Democracy Coal Mine.” We weren’t aware of Project 2025 then, but now it is obvious Florida is an early adopter of the tenets of this draconian plan for a MAGA takeover and rewriting of the U.S. Constitution. See our FFD Webpage on Project 2025 and see our program with Andra Watkins “How Project 2025 will Ruin Your Life!”

Early MAGA efforts focused on denying science, demeaning public health professionals and our military, damaging our public education system at all levels, and marginalizing already marginalized populations. Today we are witnessing an increased police state in Florida and in other MAGA-led states. Families and medical professionals trying to access and provide lifesaving medical assistance are in fear of their lives or of being arrested. In Florida, we are witnessing media outlets threatened with lawsuits for airing messages contrary to the governor’s desires. Elected officials are being terminated for views contrary to the governor.

While FFD is nonpartisan, we hosted multiple educational programs reinforcing areas of concern that are attacking freedoms under the guise of “freedom.”

  • We support defeating Florida’s Amendment 1 that would increase politization of our public schools by requiring all public school board elections be partisan. It would also disenfranchise millions of Floridians who have no party affiliation. See our program here..
  • We support passing Florida’s Amendment 4 that would restore women’s access to vital reproductive rights and protect medical professionals to provide clinical services based on their training. See our program here.
  • We learned a lot about the impact of misinformation efforts designed to influence election outcomes through fake news, artificial intelligence, impacts of voter suppression, and 2020 election deniers now in leadership roles in swing states. See our program here.
  • We have heard a national perspective from a Republican co-founder of The Lincoln Project who has spoken out for years against MAGA authoritarian efforts plus perspectives from two individuals who have researched fascist-like aspects occurring in Sarasota and Naples. See our program here.

These recent educational programs followed many other FFD sessions discussing Florida's book bans, attacks on higher education, environmental neglect, and outright efforts to attack LGBTQ+ and other marginalized populations. These activities reflect the Fascist playbook outlined in one of our early partnered programs, “Fascism on Our Doorstep” with historian Ruth Ben Ghiat. See many of the FFD recorded programs here.

If you don't know what to say to others on why their vote is important, show them some of these short ads:

In addition to many educational programs, FFD has hosted multiple postcarding parties and encouraged others to do so. We have also invested in some specific Florida digital media campaigns. While we wish we could have done even more, we feel good about these donations that FFD participants made happen over the past year. Besides investing in a digital campaign to help get out the vote and support Amendment 4, we feel good about increasing the use of The Lincoln Project’s powerful “State Line” ad. You may also find valuable messaging from some of these very recent Lincoln Project ads that are running regularly in swing states.

Three weeks left. Lethargy can lead us to lose our "messy" democracy.

We must vote and assure others do so as well.

Vote! Vote early. Vote by mail. Vote in person.  Vote!

HELP SAVE & PROTECT DEMOCRACY

Floridians for Democracy was birthed by recognizing

Florida was becoming the State Where Democracy Is In PERIL!

  • Where voting and the right to speak freely are suppressed.
  • Where academic freedom and critical thinking among students and faculty in public education and universities are thwarted.
  • Where businesses and elected officials that disagree with the governor’s agenda are punished.
  • Where women’s reproductive rights are controlled by the state.
  • Where schoolbooks are banned on whim and not reason.
  • Where LGBTQ and transgender people are under attack (not only in education but also in health care and fundamental rights).
  • Where the rights of local governments to make local decisions based on their needs are blocked.
  • Where cultural freedom is blocked.

OUR MISSION STATEMENT

We envision a state of Florida where all elected leaders proactively implement laws ensuring all residents have equal opportunity, regardless of race, gender, religion, or sexual orientation as granted by democratic freedoms dictated in the constitution.
