From the Minister

My Dear Friends—
In this season of resurrection and hope, even as the green blades rise, darkness yet looms. An unprovoked war of aggression continues to rage in Ukraine. And, here at home, a fifty-year war on the rights of women and trans people to reproductive healthcare appears set to culminate in the stripping of those rights—with immediate effect likely in at least 26 states. Read more here.
From the Bench
This Sunday, we celebrate all Mothers with music for the mother of Christianity, Mary herself. The choir will sing a Renaissance Ave Maria by Josquin des Prez, as well as A Hymn to the Virgin by Benjamin Britten. And Mary Sears and Brian Church will be the soloists in the offertory by local pioneer composer Amy Beach. The organ voluntaries are all Bach, by special request from Patsy Sharaf who will make a triumphant return visit this week, 10 years after moving to the west coast.

New Materials about Slavery: Harvard’s Report and the King’s Chapel Lecture by the Rev. John Buehrens

In the last week, we’ve all gained access to important new information about Boston, the slave trade, and our church’s involvement, through two new pieces of work: Harvard’s report ("Harvard and the Legacy of Slavery") and the special King’s Chapel lecture by the Rev. John Buehrens, our member, a past President of the national UUA, and author of a 2020 book on 1800s Boston Unitarians before the Civil War (Conflagrations). What I’ve found striking are not the new facts - Read more here.

Mother's Day Walk for Peace
Please register and donate to the King's Chapel Team.

It's not too late to sign up for the Mother's Day Walk!  The walk celebrates the potential to create more peaceful communities and supports the Louis D. Brown Peace Institute. This event touches the lives of so many in our community, old and young—see James Robinson’s video for a more eloquent reflection than we could ever give. Can you help us meet our goal to raise $5000 in support of these important works?

May 8: 26th Annual Mother’s Day Walk for Peace- 8AM Dorchester and 9AM Roxbury entry to the ~7 mile walk; or TUNE IN at 9am for the Virtual Broadcast by media partners NECN/NBC 10 Boston. A bus will follow the walkers, to provide an alternate means of making the journey for those who do not wish to walk the whole distance. View the "Why I Walk" video. Questions? Please e-mail Carol Genovese
May 8: Benefit PIANO ACTION Concert for Peace Walk - 3PM at the Parish House
There’s more to the walk than just the walk! Heinrich Christensen will be joined by his dear friend and colleague Robert Winkley, from First Church Boston in a program for 4 hands on one piano in our little chapel at 63 Beacon Street. They will play works by Brahms, Debussy, Mozart, and Poulenc. A great way to show appreciation for the mothers in your life! The program begins at 3 pm and runs approximately one hour. Free admission, donations to the Peace Institute gratefully received. Masks and vaccination cards required. For questions and additional info, please email Amanda Pickett or Carol Genovese.
From the Environmental Action Initiative
Try out an induction cooktop!

You can now borrow a portable induction cooktop in a kit that includes a magnetic bottomed saucepan, courtesy of the Environmental Action Initiative and A.R.E. Induction cooking is 5-10% more efficient than conventional electric and 3 times more efficient then than gas. Most importantly, it provides a safe, healthy, and benign environmental alternative to fossil gas stoves. See the recording of our April talk by Andee Krasner on the health hazards of gas stoves that includes a demo of the induction cooktop by Cynthia Perkins, available on the KC Environmental Action web page.

Make an appointment with Laura Zeugner or Gretchen Horton to pick up the kit at the Parish House during office hours. All instructions are included; 2-week loan time. Questions? Contact Cynthia Perkins. Happy cooking!
From the Stewardship Committee
The annual King’s Chapel stewardship campaign has launched! Be on the lookout for more information in the mail. Your generous support of the church last year allowed our beloved community to innovate, grow, and thrive despite the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, it is time to come together to build upon that success as we seek to raise $250,000 for King’s Chapel’s programming and ministry in 2022. Thank you in advance for your support, and if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Alison LaRosa, Stewardship Chair, at alison.larosa@gmail.com.
