January is named for Janus, the Roman deity often represented with two faces: One, symbolically, looking back at the days that have passed while the other is facing forward into the new year ahead. January is a good time for reflection about where we have been and anticipation as to where we would like to go.
This past year in the library has been trying, for both library staff and patrons. But great strides have been made as well. We were able to repair and reopen the Children’s Room and it looks wonderful. When I spend time in the room, I am so inspired to see how much the children, and their caregivers, engage with the room, the resources, and the staff. The Teen Room is also thriving – once school lets out for the day, we start to see the arrival of teens. We offer activities, crafts, movies, or just a place to ‘hang out’ for a while. Adults haven’t been forgotten either for we are offering a variety of new programs for adults. Whether it be Cribbage nights or belly dancing lessons, we have a little of something for everyone.
Over the past year, we have been busy at the library - checking out over 100,000 items, adding over 7,000 new resources, and welcoming over 800 new patrons. These numbers represent not just what we are doing, but also the ongoing support that you, the library community, provide.
Looking ahead to the new year, we will be making friends in other Graftons (in Ohio, West Virginia, and Wisconsin) through our Pen Pal program and adding more programs (beginners' knitting and Zumba), and watching Saturday Morning Cartoons for grades K-5. If you have ideas as to a program that you would like to see us offer, I would love to hear about it.
You may also be looking ahead and making some New Year’s resolutions. If you would like to learn about some new subject or take up a new hobby, we might be able to help you. We have recently added several Great Courses DVDs, which are series of lectures on a particular topic. It is much like taking a college course, but without the tests and grades. Whether you are interested in Practicing Mindfulness or Tai Chi, learning about the Great Pharaohs of Ancient Egypt, or taking up Bird Watching, we have all of these topics covered – as well as many more. What better time is there to immerse ourselves in learning something new than during a (sometimes) bleak mid-winter.

The Cupola Project has finally been completed. While you likely have noticed that the cupola itself on top of the library has been repaired, some work needed to be done in our Historic Reading Room. This is now complete and the cupola looks great, inside and out. If you have been in the Historic Reading Room lately, you may have noticed that the temperatures were quite chilly. There had been an issue with one of our HVAC units, but this has now been repaired and the room should now be the cozy, welcoming place it is intended to be.

A Week in Winter
By Maeve Binchy

Stoneybridge is a small town on the west coast of Ireland where all the families know one another. When Chicky Starr decides to take an old, decaying mansion set high on the cliffs overlooking the windswept Atlantic Ocean and turn it into a restful place for a holiday by the sea, everyone thinks she is crazy. Helped by Rigger (a bad boy turned good who is handy around the house) and Orla, her niece (a whiz at business), Chicky is finally ready to welcome the first guests to Stone House’s big warm kitchen, log fires, and understated elegant bedrooms. John, the American movie star, thinks he has arrived incognito; Winnie and Lillian are forced into taking a holiday together; Nicola and Henry, husband and wife,
have been shaken by seeing too much death practicing medicine; Anders hates his father’s business, but has a real talent for music; Miss Nell Howe, a retired schoolteacher, criticizes everything and leaves a day early, much to everyone’s relief; the Walls are disappointed to have won this second-prize holiday in a contest where first prize was Paris; and Freda, the librarian, is afraid of her own psychic visions.
Sharing a week with these characters is pure joy, full of Maeve’s trademark warmth and humor. Once again, she embraces us with her grand storytelling. (from Penguin Random House)
