We strive to provide the highest quality healthcare education, and this begins with the ability to help our students afford tuition, ultimately lessening their financial burden upon graduation. NYMC will host our annual “Days of Giving” fundraising campaign to raise money for student scholarships in SHSP, SOM and GSBMS. The public health program in the SHSP recently earned the maximum term of accreditation—seven years—by the Council for Education on Public Health (CEPH). The accreditation extends through December 31, 2029, with an interim report due in October 2023. CEPH is an independent agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education to accredit schools of public health and public health programs outside schools of public health. Read the full article on the CEPH accreditation.

SHSP opened the Spring 2023 semester with a new M.P.H. Generalist Program. The generalist program, which involves less time and cost, enables students to customize their education according to their interests and needs, while gaining a broad grounding in public health and expert knowledge in the core competency areas. Read the full article on the M.P.H. CDM hosted a two-day course on Operational Medicine for law enforcement. Participants included 16 officers from the FBI, Homeland Security and local police departments from Mount Vernon, Mount Pleasant, Bedford, White Plains, City of Rye, Hastings-on-Hudson, Irvington and the Village of Mamaroneck. SHSP and Touro College of Pharmacy have launched the Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.)/Master of Public Health (M.P.H.) Program, a collaboration that will allow students to pursue a career with a public health focus and offer tremendous opportunity and flexibility within the pharmacy market. Read the full article on the Pharm.D./M.P.H. program.

The NYMC community gathered to view the documentary, Aftershock, and engaged in in-depth discussion on the U.S. maternal health crisis on February 9, in recognition of Black History Month. The documentary examined the preventable deaths of two young Black women in New York City due to childbirth complications and followed their bereaved families who fought for justice and galvanized activists, birth workers and physicians to reckon with the U.S. maternal health crisis. The event was hosted by the Office of Diversity and Inclusion, Christian Medical and Dental Association, Obstetrics and Gynecology Student Interest Group, Student National Medical Association and the Universal Health Club. Kenneth Knapp, Ph.D., assistant professor and interim vice chair of the Department of Public Health recently completed a study analyzing and comparing flu vaccine uptake between caregivers and non-caregivers. The study found that caregivers are not less likely to receive a flu vaccine compared to non-caregivers.  Read the full article on the study.

Two innovative programs are on the horizon at NYMC thanks to recent federal funding. A $1,900,000 award from the Community Project Fund will support “Equity and Compassion in Medical Education Through Advanced Real-Time Simulations” and $825,000 of Congressionally directed spending will help launch the Women’s Institute for Science Entrepreneurship. In November 2022, the D.P.T. in the SHSP at NYMC welcomed four new faculty members. Board-certified in their respective clinical specialties, assistant professors of physical therapy Parmveer Kaushal, D.P.T., PT, CCS; Scott Rivera, D.P.T., PT; Victor Santamaria, M.Sc., Ph.D., PT; and Nicholas Sheehan, D.P.T. Exciting things are happening in the Institute of Public Health. For years, the four centers of excellence housed in the Institute have been focused on high-priority public health issues for communities and the nation at large. The CDH provides platforms for people with disabilities to share their experiences with the health care system. The CDM finds new ways to improve emergency preparedness for a local school district. A funding increase, along with assistance from students in the SOM, allows the CEHC to continue its mission of addressing health concerns that arise from environmental exposures. The SLP program at NYMC prides itself on its ability to prepare graduates for a career in a health care setting. Providing community activities for students to interact with populations they could potentially treat in the future is an impactful strategy implemented by the SLP department. According to the National Athletics Trainers’ Association, there are approximately 50,000 practicing athletic trainers in the United States. Only 57 athletic trainers work for the National Basketball Association. Of those 57 is SHSP alum, Jonathan Filipe, D.P.T. '16. Read the full article on Jonathan Filipe.

When it came to choosing the right SLP program, Marissa Mann, M.S. '22, was interested in schools that emphasized a medically oriented curriculum. She also longed for a diverse externship experience that offered opportunities to work in a variety of environments. Her search led her to graduate from NYMC at 20 years old, the youngest of SLP graduates. Read the full article on Marissa Mann.

While earning her Dr.P.H. in health policy and management in the SHSP amid the COVID-19 pandemic, Shannon Freeman, Dr.P.H. '22, M.P.A., was inspired by her role as chair of diversity, equity and inclusion and community health coordinator at Hackensack Meridian Pascack Valley Medical Center to complete her dissertation on vaccine hesitancy. This experience prepared her for her new role as chief affiliation officer of the Physician Affiliate Group of NY at NYC Health + Hospitals/Gotham Health, which she started in February 2023. Graduated in December 2022, Dr. Freeman is responsible for assisting with the daily operations of services and supporting physicians at NYC Health + Hospitals/Gotham Health clinics under the regulation of Federally Qualified Health Centers and is the liaison between PAGNY and the Gotham Health executive board. October 24 commemorates United Nations Day and NYMC SHSP was on hand to celebrate the 77^th anniversary of the entry into force of the United Nations Charter. Serving as liaisons to Sustainable Development Goal 3 Hub (Good Health and Wellbeing) for the United Nations Academic Impact, Padmini Murthy, M.D., M.P.H., M.S., M.Phil., CHES, professor of public health and global health director, and Amy Ansehl, D.N.P., R.N., M.S.N., FNP-BC, associate dean for School of Health Sciences and Practice student experience and director of applied practice experience, as well as associate professor of public health, were invited, along with an NYMC student, Maryam Albarakati, to participate in the special event at the United Nations headquarters in New York City.
