We Welcome Our Interim Pastor, Rev. Dr. David Felton, Glad you are here!

Merry Christmas on this the seventh day of Christmas. It's been a wonderful celebration from beginning to end. We got off to a great start with the candlelight service on the 17th of December for Kimball Union Academy in our sanctuary. The service which was led primarily by the students, celebrated the rich diversity of the student body and was quite moving. For me as someone who taught world religions for a catholic college for many years, this brought me full circle. I want to thank Tyler Lewis and Julie Haskell for this extraordinary evening.

On Christmas Eve we tried something new: we had our service at 5:00 pm. It was a beautiful evening of lessons and carols. The church was packed. The music was over the top. It is such a pleasure to be here and to be a part of these wonderful events.

And now we close out this year and await 2025. As we anticipate the New Year, we pray for your guidance and direction. This church has such a rich tradition of living out your faith with active involvement in the life of this community and throughout the world; we will seek to discover what God is calling us to do on the next part of our journey. May we make this journey with vision and faithfulness.

David

FAITH FORMATION MINISTRY

Christmas Smiles

Re-imagining Love as Radical Generosity

The Meriden Congregational church again generously participated in the local Christmas Smiles project, helping families in Claremont, NH provide requested clothing items for children and young adults through the Kiwanis Club of Claremont . This year we were able to shop for 45 people (mostly children) thanks to the generous efforts of the people in our congregation. Many thanks to the special team of elves that helped count, assemble, and deliver these gifts in time for Christmas, with little time left before the due date. It is a tradition we hope to

Continue with many years of helping our neighbors have a warm and fun Christmas!

In solidarity and peace,

Shideko (she/her) and Kelsey Hardy

MCC ADMINISTRATION AND FINANCE NEWS

January 2025

Dear Friends,

As we look to 2025 and beyond, your pledges to our Annual Campaign assure that our congregation and church family will faithfully continue to serve, lead, and make a difference next year and for years to come. It is our donations that make it possible to turn what we imagine into reality.

Next year our collective giving must generate over 75% of the funds needed to operate the programs, projects, ministries, and worship experiences that define our community. And, we are not there yet!

Your ministry--our ministry--results in the changed lives that we offer to our church family, community, and the world.  This simply could not happen without your support. If you have not yet pledged and are able to do so, please email our Stewardship Chair Jill Marshall at Jill@meridenucc.org or return the pledge card that you received in the mail in November. We are so very grateful for your contributions in support of the vibrancy of our ministry. Thank you,

With gratitude, Your Church Leadership Team

News for January 2024

JUSTICE

Social Justice

"There are millions of poor people in this country who have very little, or even nothing, to lose. If they can be helped to take action together, they...will be a new and unsettling force..." - Martin Luther King Jr.

Crop Walk

Our church raised $606 for the Crop Walk, this year. There were two walkers but many who contributed. Thanks for this good effort!!

Immigrant Justice

Our church is a member of the NH Immigrant Solidarity Network. Organizations include GSOP, AFSC, and the Faith Leader Caucus. It is interfaith and non-partisan. Please contact Shideko if you would like to get involved.

Half of the Christmas Eve collection will go to NHCUCC Immigrant & Refugee Bond Fund--$482.50

Climate Justice

Anyone who may have missed our viewing of the powerful environmental justice film, "Common Ground," is encouraged to reach out to Lee Oxenham to borrow and view what this film reveals as to how unjust practices forged our current farm system in which farmers of all colors are literally dying to feed us. The film profiles a hopeful and uplifting movement of white, black, and indigenous farmers who are using alternative “regenerative” models of agriculture that could balance the climate, save our health, and stabilize America’s economy – before it’s too late.

Racial Justice /Antiracism

A few years ago our church formed a Racial Justice Ministry Team that has been guiding us in learning about the ways in which systemic racism and white supremacy undergird so much of our history and identity. Now, in keeping with the call of our denomination, the United Church of Christ, to become an antiracist church, our Racial Justice ministry team has evolved our name to become the Antiracism Ministry Team.

One of the ways that our Church Leadership recently chose to live more fully into our antiracism commitment is through declaring ourselves to be an "Apartheid-Free" congregation, thereby affirming our theological and moral conviction that "ALL people are equal and should be treated with dignity and respect."

With a particular focus upon the oppression of the Palestinian people, this commitment is in keeping with the national Resolution calling for a Just Peace Between Israel and Palestine which our church co-sponsored. Seeking to be in solidarity especially with the people of war-ravaged Gaza,  let us continue urging Senators Hassan and Shaheen, as well as Representative Kuster, and President Biden, to call for a CeaseFire NOW!

Our weekly BLACK LIVES MATTER Vigils have been PAUSED until April 2nd 2025. Racial Justice Seekers are encouraged to spread the love by continuing to share your thoughts with family, friends, neighbors and colleagues. In addition you may want to join Ellen Bettman and the movie discussion the second Wednesday each month for Difficult Conversations About Race. The next movie to watch on your own is "In the Heat of the Night". Contact Ellen Bettman ellen.bettman@gmail.com to get the zoom link for the online discussion. SEE YOU IN THE SPRING FOR RETURNING VIGILS.

In solidarity and hope,

Shideko Terai (she/her), Outreach, Peace & Justice Coordinator

VIGILS ARE ON PAUSE UNTIL THE SPRING--APRIL 2ND 2025

New Year Notes from Worker Justice Minister Gail Kinney

Blessings and Solidarity for a New Year! The grassroots movement Indivisible, dedicated to building and protecting a progressive democracy, recently shared these 5 New Year resolutions for us as we head into what one prominent democracy champion calls “a pivotal and volatile moment” – as we also endeavor to keep living into the Love and Justice of Jesus that the MCC professes as its core:

1) Seek out community. “Whatever you do, figure out how to get into real, face-to-face

community. You’ll need it in the days ahead.”

2) Build something local.

3) Connect with those under threat.

4) Support your independent media and social media.

5) Have fun. “Create welcoming, fun, caring, impactful communities for folks to join.”

Our budding NH Faith & Labor Alliance hits four of these 5 points as do the expanding Immigrant Rights alliances across the state. Clearly there is much to do in terms of our own consciousness-raising; in terms of being Love and Justice Allies at the NH State House; and in terms of being in deep solidarity with front-line workers facing myriad workplace challenges and threats – and this includes the immigrant workers and international student workers in our midst.

If you want to build connections with others who are passionate about matters of justice; if you want to be an ally of those under threat; if you want to be inspired; and if you want have fun while engaging in activities with an impact, here are just a few links for making connections:

Join with the NH Faith & Labor Alliance for monthly Zoom check-ins and to receive info about worker solidarity actions both in the Upper Valley and across the state: email nhfaithandlabor@gmail.com to be added to our outreach list.

Connect with the NH Immigrant Rights Network convened by AFSC-NH: email

afscnh@afsc.org and ask to be added to the Immigrant Rights Network outreach list.

Become a member of the NH Conference UCC Immigrant & Refugee Support Group: email irsg.nhcucc@gmail.com for more information about membership.

Monitor proposed NH legislation that will either lift up beloved community or tear it down, and take advocacy actions as needed:

Subscribe today to receive AFSC-NH’s invaluable State House Watch every

week during the Legislative Session – and contact

economicjustice.nhcucc@gmail.com to be added to the NH

Voices of Faith [in the public square] outreach list.

Overall, in whatever challenging times we face, remember the resolutions above and take them to heart.

SOLIDARITY!
