A Message from Pastor Sara
Happy St. Patrick's Day! I often think about the Irish being lucky. And I began wondering where that idea came from. Unfortunately, after a little Google searching, I'm not sure I'll be thinking of the phrase luck of the Irish in the same way anymore.
According to Edward T. O’Donnell, an Associate Professor of History at Holy Cross College and author of "1001 Things Everyone Should Know About Irish American History,"
"During the gold and silver rush years in the second half of the 19th century, a number of the most famous and successful miners were of Irish and Irish American birth... Over time this association of the Irish with mining fortunes led to the expression 'luck of the Irish.'
"Of course, it carried with it a certain tone of derision, as if to say, only by sheer luck, as opposed to brains, could these fools succeed."
Microgressions come in hidden places all the time, not just on St. Patricks Day. When Asian Americans are complemented for "speaking excellent English", this is no different than saying the luck of the Irish. When people are encouraged to "just pull them selves up from their bootstraps", this is no different that saying the luck of the Irish. When there are no women or no people of color in a room, the glass ceiling is no different than saying the luck of the Irish.
As followers of Jesus, and as people of Joy Reigns who have a core value to LOVE joyfully (all as created in the image of God) therefore we choose our words and actions very carefully. We are not lucky to be a welcoming and affirming place. We work hard at it. Just like the Irish miners. Thank you. I'm so lucky to be your pastor!
God's Peace,
Pastor Sara

PRAYERS
Sustained by God's abundant mercy, let us pray for the church, the world, and all of creation.
ETERNAL GOD, you seal us by the Holy Spirit and mark us with the cross of Christ forever in baptism. Inspire us by your love as together we strive for justice and peace in all the earth.
CREATING GOD, by your word you have made all things, and you hate nothing you have made. Teach us to perceive the beauty of the breadth of your creation, from the grandest mountain range to the smallest springtime bud.
POWERFUL GOD, you anoint kings and established rulers. Guide the work of heads of state and elected officials. Encourage them to lead with justice and to remove barriers that impede the well-being of all.
SHEPHERDING GOD, you lead us beside still waters and restore our souls. Keep watch over those who weep; tend all who are sick and comfort those who grieve.
GOD OUR HOST, you fill us at your table with more than we could ever ask. Feed us with hunger for justice. Equip the feeding ministries of this congregation and community. Nourish us so we can nourish our neighbors.
We lift our unique prayers you now, God, trusting in your steadfast love and your promised to renew your whole creation.
HEAR OUR PRAYERS FOR:
