It's the year-end countdown!

13 days until Christmas!

There are 19 days left in 2024.

May I remind you that it is time to review your charitable pledges and intentions for 2024.

Join the FaithWorks' 2024 campaign as we continue to work towards our annual goal of $1.5 million.

We would like to exceed that goal to offer more assistance to our existing ministry partners and help the new applicants seeking our support for the first time.

Let’s all review our charitable intentions and pledges and be as generous as we can in 2024!

The following article is about

our ministry partner

One City Peterborough.

It is an example of the work that your donation to FaithWorks supports.

“Amazing change!” “Astounding growth!”

These are the sentiments expressed by the members of the FaithWorks Allocations Committee when visiting One City Peterborough this past October. The entire operation of OCP has expanded unimaginably to meet the ever-increasing needs in Peterborough. From the new and larger facilities, the augmented staff and volunteers continue to support and advocate for those left on the margins with innovative and compassionate services.

The following is taken from OCP's website onecityptbo.ca

One City Peterborough is an organization that believes that everyone belongs and that together we flourish. To that end, we focus on supporting those who have experienced homelessness and/or criminalization towards their full inclusion into the community.

Some of our programs look to create stability and increase wellness, such as housing, employment and support programs; some of our work focuses on advocating for systemic change such as challenging laws that criminalize individuals; and some of our work addresses immediate needs, such as offering shelter and meal programs.

OUTREACH

Our outreach team supports individuals in our community who are unsheltered, living in encampments and accessing services at the Trinity Community Centre.

Our Outreach Workers regularly visit people who are unsheltered to provide necessities such as food, water, clothing, harm reduction supplies, hygiene products, first aid supplies, and survival gear. These provisions are critical to supporting people’s well-being as they try to achieve stability while living in challenging conditions.

A key component of this program is offering system navigation and intensive case management support. The team provides referrals to essential services, connects individuals with housing and employment resources, and helps them access necessary health interventions.

HOUSING

We believe that housing is a human right.

Creating innovative and affordable housing options for those experiencing homelessness in Peterborough is a main pillar of our work at One City.

We own five houses and partner with three private landlords and three non-profit agencies in town to offer a total of 48 spots in 11 homes.

EMPLOYMENT

Our employment programs are one way that we foster belonging and dignity in our community.

We acknowledge the ways in which people are excluded from the workforce and aim to create space where people can choose to be employed, are valued for their talents and gifts, and challenged to learn new skills while receiving the support they need to succeed.

Employment programs offered include the Summer Street Cleaning Team, the Maintenance/Labour Crew and the Summer Green Team.

REINTEGRATION HOUSING

Our homes provide a bridge between federal correctional facilities and the community.

Canada is currently faced with a crisis of care in federal correctional facilities as more individuals in prison are aged 50 or older than ever before. Common health concerns in institutions include heart and lung issues, cancer, diabetes, dementia, mobility limitations and neurological disorders. In addition, many incarcerated people also suffer from mental health issues that may worsen overall health outcomes while incarcerated.

Most federal correction institutions and reintegration homes cannot meet the demands for medical care posed by the aging population.

Our Reintegration Housing Program addresses this significant gap in services by offering services that assist men with needs in the areas of mobility, activities of daily living or disease management while maintaining the safety and security of the community. Our goal, in partnership with Peterborough Parole Office, is to ensure that this population receives consistent and compassionate care in a safe, secure facility.

One City also advocates for compassionate transfer of incarcerated individuals approaching end of life to a more appropriate palliative care setting.
