OCTOBER 2024 NEWS

A student interviews artist and author Robert Shetterly in the gallery of the Americans Who Tell the Truth exhibit at James Madison University in Virginia. In a social justice course based on the portraits, each student investigated a different portrait subject's life. Many students subsequently engaged with social justice issues in their community. Rob's newest book (third in a series), Portraits of Peacemakers, has just been released!

Muriel Fox, feminist author and indefatigable 96-year-old co-founder of the National Organization for Women (NOW), gave a rousing talk, sparked discussion, and signed copies of her memoir, The Women's Revolution: How We Changed Your Life, at Smith College on September 26th. While on campus, she also spoke with a class in women and gender studies.

NEW IN OCTOBER!

Portraits of Peacemakers:

Americans Who Tell the Truth

Robert Shetterly

ORDER

We are thrilled to announce the publication of Portraits of Peacemakers, the third volume in the Americans Who Tell the Truth series. The book features Robert Shetterly’s striking color portraits and profiles of fifty peace activists as well as essays by Chris Hedges, Kali Rubaii, Paul K. Chappell, Medea Benjamin, Alice Rothchild, and David Swanson. The people honored in this beautiful book approach peacemaking in manifold ways. They have told the truth about the lies enabling war, they have protested, they have gone to jail for peace, made art imbued with the suffering of war, the stupidity of war and its cruelty, taught the curricula of peace, exposed the unspeakable wounds and trauma visited on children in war, and shown how environmentally historically, and psychologically wars never end. They resist, resist, resist. They act with love.

Hardcover, 128 pages, 8.5 x 11 in, 50 color images

Praise for Portraits of Peacemakers

“Destined to become an American classic, this book is a brilliant anthology of compelling essays, quotes, biographies, and soulful portraits of courageous antiwar/peace leaders. Read these powerful and thought-provoking statements about ending war and achieving peace and ponder the inspired portraits of the Americans involved. Thank you, Robert Shetterly, for recognizing and honoring these heroes and role models. This is how we build a culture of peace.”

Michael D. Knox, PhD, Chair, US Peace Memorial Foundation

“This book won’t simply move you through its depictions of courageous peacemakers, it will teach you how to build peace. The stunning portraits will arrest your eyes, but that’s not all they will do. The portraits are accompanied by the words uttered by these brave people. Read them. Heed them. We do not have to submit to the proposition that violence is necessary or inevitable. Peace can become our path.”

Zoe Weil, Founder, Institute for Humane Education

Robert Shetterly is a visual artist, social activist, and writer. Over the past twenty years, he has painted 275 portraits of citizens who address issues of social, environmental, and economic fairness in the series Americans Who Tell the Truth. His work is the subject of a feature-length documentary, Truth Tellers, being broadcast nationally by American Public Television. Shetterly lives and works in Brooksville, Maine.

Creative Instigation:

The Art and Strategy of Authentic Community Engagement

Fern Tiger

ORDER

We are thrilled to announce our second October title, Creative Instigation, a collection of in-depth case stories focused on effective and innovative community engagement and policymaking in diverse cities across the western US. Each story reflects the history and uniqueness of the community, organization, or institution—providing grit to the importance of context to understand the why and the how of this work. It includes the successes and challenges, and the efforts needed to do this work well. Unlike “typical engagement,” where meetings are announced via limited venues with limited information, Creative Instigation describes engagement that is authentic, outreach that is expansive, and research that uncovers the soul of a community. No two approaches are alike.

Paperback, 328 pages, 8 x 10 in, 140 color images

Praise for Creative Instigation

“Through in-depth, real-world examples of democratizing actions, Tiger shows how communities long frustrated by institutional exclusions, systemic oppressions, and the politics of capitalism can lead to what she frames as “authentic engagement.” Creative Instigation re-frames art as movement-building and should be required reading for everyone concerned with community organizing, leadership building, and addressing systemic injustices.”

Christopher B. Knaus, Professor, University of Washington Tacoma and

University of South Africa

“Reading this book is like sitting at the campfire of a long-time leader and listening to the stories she has to tell. Fern Tiger is a master of how behind-the-scenes leadership can successfully involve communities in key public policy matters, often finding an unexpected way to bring wins to more than one side.”

Jan Masaoka, California Association of Nonprofits

Fern Tiger, founder and creative director of Fern Tiger

Robert Shetterly profiled in Hyperallergic

Maya Pontone interviews Robert Shetterly about Portraits of Peacemakers for Hyperallergic:

Sometimes [the cause is] all about race. Sometimes it’s about gender. Sometimes it’s about the environment and climate. Often it’s about peace or peacemaking. Always, though, it’s about people with the courage and perseverance to insist that politicians and media tell the truth about what’s being said, what the real problems are, and how they can be fixed

World Beyond War reviews Portraits of Peacemakers

"These makers of peace are not focused on inner peace or quiet streets or any of the millions of things “peace” is used to mean that don’t involve ending war. Nor are they working for a mere pause in the shooting. Rather, the vision one finds here is one of a world in which war is replaced with a just and sustainable system of living." David Swanson

The Making of a Feminist Physician

Alice Rothchild

November 2024

A stunning autobiography—in free verse—of Rothchild's journey from 1950's good girl to feisty, feminist obstetrician-gynecologist forging her own direction in the sexist world of medicine

“This remarkable memoir depicts so eloquently the many challenges facing women going into medicine both back in the 1970s as well as more recently. It will surely inspire both young and old to speak truth to power as we seek to preserve our fragile democratic institutions.”
