Our carrots are very popular and I often get asked why they are so good. Like with most
things, it comes down to care. We start by searching for, trialing, and investing in the
best varieties. The modern orange carrot, sweeter and more nutritious than its
predecessors, originated with Dutch breeders in the 12th century, and the best carrot seed
is still produced by Dutch companies. We just spent over $4,000 on carrot seed for 2025.
Then there is the whole careful growing process, with constant attention to soil nutrients
and moisture, weed management (which for carrots could be a whole article in itself),
and of course the timing of every detail. And finally, there is terroir, the particularities of
this unique farm site. Our soil, a somewhat heavy clay loam, can be difficult to cultivate
and is not even classified as class 1 ag soil (it’s class 3!). But as our results show, it has
the potential to grow exceptional vegetables.
