TWO EXCITING EVENTS WILL CELEBRATE AMERICA'S FLAGSHIP

Conservancy Supporters To Gather in Philadelphia This Month

This month the Conservancy is pleased to be partnering with Philadelphia artist Brooke Lanier and author (and Conservancy Hampton Roads Chapter co-chair) Stanton Daywalt for two exciting events near the Big U's berth at Pier 82 in Philadelphia.

On Saturday, October 14 and Sunday, October 15, from 12:00pm to 6:00pm, artist Brooke Lanier will open her studio on S. 4th Street in Philadelphia to Conservancy supporters and SS United States enthusiasts. The open house event is being held as part of the Philadelphia Open Studio Tours event. Lanier's series of works featuring the SS United States, some of which were previously featured in the “Berths and Ghosts” exhibit, has garnered rave reviews.

Lanier previously shared with the Conservancy that she fascinated by the SS United States and her "dichotomy of luxury and military utility, as well as the state-of-the-art innovations in design, safety, and speed."

Later this month, on Friday, October 20, from 3:30 to 6:30pm, an event will feature Stanton Daywalt, Hampton Roads Chapter co-chair and co-author of "SS United States: An Operational Guide to America's Flagship." The book was co-authured with F. Samuel Bauer and James K. Rindfleisch, a former caretaker of the vessel. Daywalt will co-host a book signing and speaking engagement with the Conservancy at the Philadelphia IKEA cafe, overlooking the SS United States at her berth.

The book-signing will go from 3:30pm to 6:30pm, with a lecture and discussion held at 5:00pm. Daywalt will also be available to sign pre-purchased copies of his book, before and after the program. Due to IKEA’s policy that prohibits selling from 3rd parties on IKEA premises, the book must be pre-ordered.

If you will be attending the event and wish to purchase the book in advance, you may do so via Venmo or check. To order by check, please contact the author at  stanton.daywalt@gmail.com for details about where to mail the check. Checks will need to be received no later than October 14th. A copy will be reserved for you, which will be personally signed at the event. For every book purchased in connection with this event, 20% of sales will be donated to the SS United States Conservancy.

CONSERVANCY COLLECTION EXPANDS WITH ADDITION OF SECOND TISSOT PANEL

The Conservancy recently added to its collection with the acquisition of an additional panel from Charles Tissot's “Snowflake Crystal Montage."

The panel, which was originally displayed in the first-class private dining room of the SS United States, went into a private collection following the Guernsey's auction commissioned by one of the ship's former owners, Richard Hadley, in 1984.

This new acquisition is the second such panel acquired by the Conservancy. As with the other signature pieces in our permanent collection, we remain hopeful that these treasures can be on display for public view and enjoyment in a future shipboard museum.

The Charles Tissot panel acquisition was made possible by through the lead catalyst gift from Conservancy supporter Carl Wesch III. We remain profoundly grateful for Carl's vision, generosity, and enduring commitment to the historic legacy of the SS United States. Additional gifts in support of this special acquisition were generously contributed by William Myhre, Marc and Lauren Shenfield, Mark Perry, Thomas Watkins, Christopher Bell, and Susan Gibbs.

GERMAN THEATRICAL PERFORMANCE PAYS TRIBUTE TO THE BIG U

& FORMER CREW MEMBERS

Production featured the late Joe Rota and Joe Muchulsky, former crew members and Conservancy leaders, as lead characters

“No Finer Way,” a theatrical performance created by Das Letzte Kleinod artistic director Jens-Erwin Siemssen, which highlights America's Flagship, her passengers, and her crew, recently completed its performance run as part of a tribute to Bremerhaven's Columbus Terminal, which is being redeveloped.

As we've shared previously, Siemssen visited the SS United States at her pier in Philadelphia in 2020 as part of his research process. At the time, he conducted interviews with Conservancy President Susan Gibbs, and former crew members Joe Rota and Joe Muchulsky. Siemssen was so inspired by Rota and Muchulsky's unique stories that the two former crew members became two of the play's lead characters!

Just before the show's run, Karl Heuer, a local Conservancy supporter, distributed hundreds of copies of materials about the SS United States Conservancy during the "Bremerhaven Maritime Days 2023," helping to spread the message about the importance of America's Flagship and the Conservancy's fight to save her.

The Conservancy is deeply grateful to Jens-Erwin Siemssen, the cast and crew of "No Finer Way", and everyone who helped bring the SS United States' spirit back to Bremerhaven.

MORE FROM THE SS UNITED STATES CONSERVANCY

Seatrade Cruise News recently shared an article about Conservancy Advisory Board member Peter Knego's efforts to save treasures of cruise ships and ocean liners past.

Some of pieces from Peter's collection recently went on display as part of the 'Steam and Splendor' exhibition at the Maritime Museum of San Diego. Among the unique items was this statue he salvaged from the Island Princess. While much of Knego’s collection comes from ships lost to history, the SS United States Conservancy is working to collect and reunite artifacts from the SS United States for a future shipboard museum.
