A Happy Healthy New Year with Cannabis

By Billee Sharp

A Happy New Year to all! In Chinese astrology 2023 is the year of the Water Rabbit which is characterized as holding great hope for the future. 2023 is already bringing us Californians much-needed rain in abundance. Despite the storms and the sad losses, this weather has to be seen as a good omen, even if a little soggy!

January 1st is traditionally Resolution Day and many of us set an intention for positive changes to our behavior in the coming year.

Cannabinol: the Darling of the Phytocannabinoids

by Ruth Hill, RN

Dementia is defined as a group of progressive disorders affecting the cognitive ability that is so severe it prevents the individual from independently brushing their teeth, taking a shower, or remembering their spouse’s name. Alzheimer’s (AD) is the most prevalent form of dementia. An estimated 6.5 million Americans aged 65 and older are living with Alzheimer's in 2022. Seventy-three percent are 75 or older.

About 1 in 9 aged 65 and older (10.7%) has Alzheimer's.

Synergy Wellness Member Testimonial

Dear Synergy Wellness,

I wanted to let you know how happy I am with your 4:1 CBD:THC tincture. I had been taking the 2:1 Cannatonic Tincture for a number of years and it was working pretty well for my knee pain from osteoarthritis, but not as much as I would have liked. Then I got a copy of Leonard’s book, CBD, A Patient’s Guide to Medicinal Cannabis and looked up his recommendations for osteoarthritis. He recommended the 4:1 blend. So I tried that and wow, it has worked so much better for my knee pain. Especially, as the years wear on, my knees wear on. I highly recommend the 4:1 tincture, Synergy #104; and I highly recommend checking out his book, too.

Thank you!

- Barbara

How CBD Supports Bone Health

by Bille Sharp

This month’s member testimonial recounts how pain associated with osteoporosis was treated successfully with CBD-rich tincture. Recent research studies have shown that CBD has an important role in bone health. Studies in the U.S. and the U.K. have been exploring the role of CBD in bone density using mice as subjects.

There are two types of bone cells in vertebrates; osteoblasts, which produce bone cells and osteoclasts, which degrade bone cells. The studies both showed that CBD blocked the osteoclasts at the receptor site which gave support to the bone cell producing osteoblasts.

CBD has also been widely praised for speeding bone fracture recovery. Significant anecdotal evidence attests to this attribute and the recent science would seem to support the claim.

Bone density deficiencies are linked to low levels of Vitamin D and K, calcium, magnesium which can be addressed through a healthy diet. Weight-bearing exercise also supports bone density and this can be very gentle, without actually using any weights, just your own limbs!

When pain is a symptom of osteoporosis a blended CBD-rich tincture that includes THC for pain management is recommended. Supporting bone health with diet, exercise and CBD-rich supplements is our recommendation.

The Rising Star of CBG

Cannabigerol, CBG, was one of the earliest cannabinoid discoveries, Raphael Mecholam first identified it in 1964 as one of the minor cannabinoids, as CBG represents just 1% or less of the whole cannabinoid profile.

As research progressed further it became apparent that of the hundred or so cannabinoids present in the average hemp plant, every single one was derived directly from CBGa, the so-called “mother” or precursor of THC, CBD,CBN, THCV etc. By the time a cannabis plant is mature and ready to harvest only a tiny percentage of CBG is left in the plant. This is probably why both interest and research in CBG started slowly, as there was so little actual material available.
