SMALL BUSINESS BREAKFAST

HELPING FAMILIES FOR OVER 38 YEARS!

Thanks to SAAFE House for sponsoring the December Chamber Small Business Breakfast. Community Relations Director Tammy Farkas shared, “SAAFE House was initially organized as the Walker County Family Violence Council to provide services for residential (emergency shelter) or outreach (non-residential) victims of family violence. In 1988 a sexual assault program was added to the list of available services. To reflect the expanded services available more accurately to the community, the organization's name was changed the following year to SAAFE House, which stands for "Sexual Assault and Abuse Free Environment." SAAFE House currently operates in 4 counties, Polk (shelter), San Jacinto, Trinity, and Walker (shelter).

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT

Russell Humphrey has called Huntsville home since coming to SHSU in 1977.  He and his wife Tish have owned Curves fitness center in Huntsville since 2000 and Conroe/Willis since 2001. They have two children and recently found out they are expecting two grandchildren this year.

Russell currently is serving his second term on Huntsville City Council and enjoys chairing the Finance committee and serving as Mayor pro tem.  After his 10-year employment with the City of Huntsville, Russell saw the need for more residential housing opportunities and formed several businesses to help expand his goals.

Tish enjoys the other businesses that keep him busy because as she says “it keeps him out of Curves, unless she needs him.” Russell enjoyed being in HLI class #24 and looks forward to continued service to the Huntsville community.

POP HIGHLIGHTS

The POP committee met on Wednesday, January 11th and heard from the Huntsville Success Academy at the high school as well as from Westmoreland Academy, the disciplinary alternative school. Both of these innovative programs at HISD operate with the intention of giving students a second chance for success. Both of these programs are showing that our most challenged students can, and do, make the most of these second chance opportunities. Students at Westmoreland are being aided by new transition programs that help them return to regular classes with better chances of success in the future.

There are numerous ways for the community to help by donating money to purchase food and school supplies for these students, providing gift cards for groceries or gas, or by volunteering to mentor students. Any donations should be marked “Hornet Success Academy”. Please contact Ms. Sharonda Johnson (936-435-6122)/sjohnson-1@huntsvilleisd.org) with questions or to schedule an appointment to drop off donations.
