President's Message

Springtime!

The Iowa CPCU Society Chapter has been springing into action for you this year already! We have been group reporting CE credits for those who have signed up and attended the January and February meetings. CE for CPCUs is a reporting program that tracks continuing education for CPCUs. Participating CPCUs are included in the CPCU in Good Standing list which shows you’re engaged in an ongoing commitment to learn and grow in your professional career. If you are not in Good Standing, your CPCU designation is still valid and you still hold the designation, your status will just show as “Not in Good Standing.”

Participating in continuing education is easy! Earn 24 hours of CE credits in 24 months, log your credits (or if you sign up and attend the Iowa CPCU Society Chapter’s meetings, we log the time for you), and complete the renewal process. We will continue to group report for the rest of the meetings this year, but if you miss signing up before the event, don’t forget to log your own CE credits! For more information on the continuing education for CPCUs initiative, click here.

Speaking of continuing education, our Valentine’s Day breakfast meeting at St. Kilda Collective was egg-celent! We were lucky enough to have Insurance Commissioner, Doug Ommen, speak to us on industry/regulatory updates, the different committees he serves on and the impact they make to the industry, and the focus on financial literacy in Iowa and how to increase the financial knowledge of students in our state. Thank you to all who attended and participated in asking thought-provoking questions!

Our meeting this month will be at Farm Bureau where we’ll hear from Iowa Insurance Fraud Bureau Investigator, Matt Mortvedt. This topic is perfect for Ethics Awareness Month! Please join us in person or via Zoom to learn about the crimes he investigates and fraud trends he sees. If you register and attend, remember the Iowa CPCU Society Chapter will report that one hour CE credit for you!

Enjoy the weather as the seasons change and I hope to see you at the March meeting!

New Designee Spotlight

Andrew Moch

Reinsurance Territory Manager

Grinnell Mutual

I grew up in North Dakota and attended the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks. I have been on the Grinnell Mutual team for over 10 years in claim roles and now in reinsurance. I currently work with all of Grinnell’s member mutual insurance companies in Minnesota.

Earning the CPCU designation has always been a goal of mine. It was a long journey (longer than I wanted it to be!) and I had many people at Grinnell Mutual that had the CPCU designation, and many that did not, encourage me along the way. I am appreciative of that support. A lot of the knowledge I gained from taking the exams, I was able to translate directly into my work with our member mutuals.

When I was studying for the CPCU exams, I wanted to retain the information, not just learn it well enough to pass an exam. I would read through all the material, take practice exams, and then go back and focus on the areas I needed to put more work in. I think people that get their CPCU are typically lifelong knowledge seekers, and like many others I will continue to further educate and improve myself.

Now that I have the CPCU designation, I could give you a list of hobbies I will have more time for, but in actuality, we have three young sons that are very active and it seems we spend most of our time chasing them around to different sporting events, music lessons, and other activities. I wouldn’t change it for the world. One fun fact about me is I am a published writer – many years ago I wrote a poem that ended up in an anthology of poems from young writers.
