A MESSAGE FROM THE RABBI:
This week we are shifting to the next section of preliminary prayers called: “P’sukei D’Zimra”(verses of song). Essentially it is a service wholly designed to praise God. The theory goes something like this: If we are going to be making requests of God (which we do in the main prayer service), then we should start by praising God. (It is a holy “buttering up” process). But, it goes further than that. God does not need our praise. Rather, we excessively praise God in order to focus on God rather than ourselves.

Note also that these blessings refer to a universal God. We are not praising our personal God here, rather the blessings refer to the God of everything:

Blessed is He Who spoke, and the world came into being, blessed is He; blessed is He Who maintains the creation; blessed is He Who says and does; blessed is He Who decrees and fulfills; blessed is He Who has compassion on the earth; blessed is He Who has compassion on the creatures; blessed is He Who rewards well those who fear Him, blessed is He Who lives forever and exists eternally; blessed is He Who redeems and saves blessed is His Name.
Blessed are You, Adonai, our God, King of the Universe, the Almighty, the merciful Father, Who is verbally extolled by His people, praised and glorified by the tongue of His pious ones, and His servants, and through the songs of David Your servant. We will extoll You, Adonai our God, with praises and psalms; we will exalt, praise, and glorify You; we will mention Your Name, and proclaim You—our King, our God. Unique One, Life of the worlds, King, praised and glorified forever is His great Name. Blessed are You, Adonai, King, Who is extolled with praises.

Why do you think that there are 13 Baruch’s in this section?
The first blessing is beautiful. “Blessed is God Who spoke and created the world”. By starting with this, P‘sukei D’Zimra actually starts from the beginning of Torah.
Read the translation a few times. Are there any other patterns you see? Should anything be added?

As we continue to take this journey through the liturgy, please remember to email me your thoughts or comments. (Mjayrab@gmail.com)

Shabbat Parah
takes place on the Shabbat before Shabbat HaChodesh, in preparation for Passover. Numbers 19:1-22 describes the parah adumah (“red heifer”) in the Jewish temple as part of the manner in which the kohanim and the Jewish people purified themselves so that they would be ready (“pure”) to sacrifice the korban Pesach.

TORAH READING
Parashat Ki Tisa
Exodus 30:11-34:35
Numbers 19:1-22
Here is the Reading

Ki-Tisa (“When You Elevate”) opens as God tells Moses to collect a half-shekel donation from all Israelites and to anoint the Mishkan (Tabernacle), its vessels, and the priests. The Israelites worship the golden calf and Moses breaks the tablets. Moses beseeches God to forgive, and returns with a second set of tablets.

PICKLEBALL SUNDAY & THURSDAY AT 10:00 AM
IT WAS A WONDERFUL PURIM AT THE JCC
PASTA PIZZA AND PURIM Dinner was quite a treat. Irene Babst & Noralyn Carroll outdid themselves creating each dish from scratch. Homemade gravy (sauce) made a delicious baked ziti, pizza with various toppings, salad and of course Hamentashen made by members last Sunday (see above) were enjoyed by everyone .
Following dinner, we completed the mitzvah of hearing the megillah read. Groggers and boxes of mac and cheese (donated afterward to the St. Francis food bank) made a rousing noise when "you know who's" name was read. Thanks to Aaron Lombardi and Stu Lehrer (who read the characters with different voices) for bringing the story of Esther alive.

Discussion Leader: TBA
The Choice
By Maggie Anton

Maggie Anton has written a wholly transformative novel that takes characters inspired by Chaim Potok and ages them into young adults in Brooklyn in the 1950s, a time of Elvis & Marilyn, communist scares & polio vaccines, Jewish migration & American integration. When Hannah Eisen, a successful journalist, interviews Rabbi
Nathan Mandel, a controversial Talmud professor, she persuades him to teach her the mysteries of the text forbidden to women—even though it might cost him his job if discovered. Secret meetings and lively discussions bring the two to the edge of a line that neither dares to cross, as their relationships with each other and Judaism are tested.

LET IT BE MORNING, an insightful, wry comedy, is the story of Sami a Palestinian-born Israeli citizen living in Jerusalem who receives an invitation to his brother’s wedding forcing him to return to the Arab village where he grew up. After the wedding finishes, with no explanation, Sami's hometown is put under a military blockade lockdown by the Israeli government.

Chaos erupts overnight amongst the villagers stuck behind the wall due to the blockade, Sami is cut off from the outside world and trapped in an unexpected situation. As he deals with questions about his own identity and hidden secrets are revealed, Sami watches everything he holds dear begin to fall apart.

LET IT BE MORNING is a film about a state of siege, both internal and external – centered around a man who has built a wall around his heart, and how that inner wall starts coming apart when an actual, real wall goes up around his hometown.

Advanced tickets are recommended and appreciated.
