Spring, Easter, and Grief:

Times of Sacred Transition

Strolling to my car in the parking lot outside the cemetery office in late February, my eye caught a “happy” glimpse of bright yellow flowers poking through the barren cemetery grass at the base of a tree. I was enticed to go over and take a closer look at these harbingers of spring. I picked one and brought it to my nose to be surprised with the sweet fragrance of the Winter Aconite. I’m sure I’ve seen them before in past winters, but this particular time, I was really aware of their presence. What hope and joy this little flower brought as I eagerly anticipate the passage of our current season of dormancy. It was as if creation (God through creation) was speaking to my heart saying, “Hang in there. It’s going to get better. Spring is almost here!”

We know that the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time. Not only so, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for our adoption to sonship, the redemption of our bodies.”

Romans 8:22-23

Like the transition from winter to spring, and Lent to Easter, we as grievers also wait in eager anticipation, with groaning, the redemption of our brokenness back into wholeness and our eventual return to living the full life that God intended for us. But to get to the fullness and redemption in life, it is necessary for us to navigate (and find purpose in) the sacred times of “coming out/ coming forth”. You are just like the little Winter Aconite plants that awaken from a state of dark winter dormancy and preparation (soaking up all the surrounding nutrients), to push through cold hard soil in pursuit of what it could not see but toward something which the Creator implanted: Hope and life in a new way.

It is this faith and trust in our Almighty Creator God, that allows us to rise triumphantly from seasons of death and darkness… Just like Jesus did through His Passion and death, to His Glorious Resurrection.

In this month’s Bereavement Bulletin, we hope to encourage you and bring you hope that God, who loves you with the greatest passion, accompanies you in your grief and in your re-awakening. Trust the Creator and the process to use your time of grief to ground yourself in that which will energize and strengthen you. You WILL emerge stronger and with renewed purpose.

We welcome you to join us at any of our free monthly grief support meetings (in-person and/or virtual). Come, sit, listen, and share (as you are able to). Be in the company of others who understand, who get where you are, and find a place where you are able to freely discuss what you are feeling.  Information to register for our monthly Grief Support Groups is shown below in “Upcoming Events”.

Finding Faith After Loss

I remember the month my grandmother died well. My grandmother was my best friend. Growing up, I was attached to her hip. We went everywhere together, and I used to beg my parents to drop me off at her house quite frequently. As she got older, she became more recluse, overwhelmed by the anxieties of this world. As her involvement with the outside world decreased, so did her overall quality of life and her health. My last interaction with her was the act of bringing her Holy Communion. After she received Jesus, she looked at me with a straight face and asked, “what are you going to say in my eulogy?”
