Week of 3/2/2023

Our Client Appreciation picnic is on Saturday. The weather may be a little uncooperative, but we’ll be there, rain or shine! We have reserved large pavilions and will have great food. We hope to see you there. Until 2017, The Lowry Letter® was a quarterly publication. We decided it would be interesting to revisit our 1st Quarter edition from 2013. Some highlights that fit with today very nicely:

“Cash Is Not a Long-term Investment Strategy:” Recession fears were high in 2013, and investors who sat on the sidelines would have missed very strong performance that year. We said, “We expect that growth will continue to be lower than historical averages through 2013, but that we will avoid economic contraction (recession). We do not expect significant inflation in the near term. Continued low interest rates and the treasury buy-back program do pose a danger of future, high inflation." On January 1, 2013, FDIC coverage increased to $250,000 per account registration per institution. Seemed like a lot at the time! Do you remember the “Fiscal Cliff?” At the time, the Bush tax cuts had expired and reduced government spending through sequestration was set to begin. There were concerns that it would lead to a big slowdown without some kind of deal. We wrote: “The last-minute tax deal did result in higher income taxes on those with larger incomes, and higher payroll taxes on all Americans. These increases still represent a better tax scenario than what would have occurred without a deal. The other side of the fiscal cliff has to do with government spending. That issue, and the related debate over the debt ceiling, will play out over the next weeks and months. We feel it unlikely that Congress and the White House will be able to do more than a short-term solution of the kind that we have become accustomed to in recent years.”
