2023 Excellence Awards

Four staff members at Gardant-managed communities were honored earlier this month with Illinois Health Care Association 2023 Excellence Awards.

Mike Stickler of Grand Prairie of Macomb was named the Food Service/Dietary Professional of the Year.

Sarah Roland Lucchesi of Heritage Woods of South Elgin was honored as the Business Office Professional of the Year.

Jennifer Rood of Heritage Woods of Freeport received the Director of Nursing of the Year award.

Rosemarie Rodrigo was honored as the Certified Nursing Assistant of the Year.

Benefit of Assisted Living

A recent article posted on the U.S. News and World Report Health website highlighted how assisted living communities enable older adults to live independently while getting assistance and how the communities differ from nursing homes.

Gardant ranks as the 7^th largest provider of assisted living in the U.S., according to the 2023 Argentum & Lument Largest Provider Report.

Sitting, Exercise and Dementia Risk

The more older adults engage in sedentary behaviors the higher the risk of dementia, says a story posted on the Medical News Today website. Sedentary behaviors also contribute to poor vascular health and unhealthy blood pressure levels

A story posted on the Forbes website notes that researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital think they have found the reason why exercise cuts the risk of Alzheimer’s.

Wii Bowling Championship

Two teams of residents at Gardant-managed communities have advanced to the finals of the Affordable Assisted Living Coalition’s 2023 Wii Bowling Tournament. The team from GateWay at River City in Peoria will be competing against the team from Heritage Woods of Bolingbrook in the Wii Bowling World Series Championship 2023 on Oct. 26 in Springfield, Illinois.

The GateWay community serves individuals 22 to 64 years of age with disabilities. Heritage Woods of Bolingbrook serves adults 65 and older. Both communities are certified for the Illinois Supportive Living program.

Critical Shortage of Geriatricians

As our nation ages, there is a critical shortage of physicians trained to treat older adults.

Celebrating 10 Years of Service

St. Anthony Supportive Living of Lansing recently celebrated its 10^th Anniversary. Since opening in the summer of 2013, the community has served nearly 600 adults 65 years of age and older who have needed assistance to maintain their independence.

Older Adults and Medicare

Many older adults indicate they are overwhelmed by all of the Medicare options that are available. A Commonwealth Fund report found that they are more likely to stick with their current plan than switch when they feel overwhelmed.

Tapped as Secretary

Gregory Douglas, Gardant’s Vice President of Development and Advocacy, has been elected Secretary of the Board of Directors of the Illinois Health Care Association.

Putting Off Medical Care

With health issues tending to rise with age, the cost of medical care can be a burden for retirees, especially for those on fixed incomes. New data reveals that older adults may be risking their well-being by putting off needed medical care because of a lack of funds.

A geriatrician at Cleveland Clinic highlighted how spending time with grandchildren can benefit older adults.
