National Developmental Disability Awareness Month History
National Developmental Disabilities (DD) Awareness Month officially began in 1987 with a proclamation from President Reagan to help bring awareness and acceptance for people of every ability. Since then, families, self-advocates, advocacy groups and state legislators have been working to increase opportunities for people with disabilities.
How can you raise awareness?
Wear orange! Orange is a color symbolizing energy and positivity. It’s also the official color of Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month!
Hold an an art contest and showcase the artwork in your office, on your website, or on social media!
You could also host a talent contest to highlight the creative talents of individuals with developmental disabilities and invite the community to attend.
Record a video or podcast to raise awareness. You can invite people with developmental disabilities to tell their stories about their experiences with education, employment, and community life.
Start a book club or hobby group and invite members of the community to join you and partner with an individual with a disability.
We now drop-off and pick-up materials to school districts 30 minutes or more away from the TechACCESS of RI office. Are you interested in finding out more? Email Beckyfor more information.
