National Developmental Disability Awareness Month History
Raising Awareness
National Developmental Disabilities (DD) Awareness Month officially began in 1987 with a proclamation from President Reagan to help bring awareness and acceptance for people of every ability. Since then, families, self-advocates, advocacy groups and state legislators have been working to increase opportunities for people with disabilities.

How can you raise awareness?
  • Wear orange! Orange is a color symbolizing energy and positivity. It’s also the official color of Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month!
  • Hold an an art contest and showcase the artwork in your office, on your website, or on social media!
  • You could also host a talent contest to highlight the creative talents of individuals with developmental disabilities and invite the community to attend.
  • Record a video or podcast to raise awareness. You can invite people with developmental disabilities to tell their stories about their experiences with education, employment, and community life.
  • Start a book club or hobby group and invite members of the community to join you and partner with an individual with a disability.
