NWILED Lunch & Learn

Northwest Illinois Economic Development (NWILED) will host a free public lecture event with author and farmer Beth Hoffman on Thursday, February 2nd at Lola’s Deli in Elizabeth, IL.

Local growers, producers, farmers, food entrepreneurs, agritourists, and community leaders are invited to Lunch & Learn – Bet the Farm where they will receive a complementary lecture, lunch, and copy of Bet the Farm – The Dollars and Sense of Growing Food in America.

According to USDA, median farm income in 2022 is expected to be negative $661. Even with high commodity prices, the rising cost of land, fertilizer, and equipment, and changing climate, farming is

risky business.

Author Beth Hoffman began her food writing career focused on culture. Now twenty years into writing and producing work on food and agriculture, she has moved with her husband from San Francisco to his family& 570 acres in South Central Iowa.

Bet the Farm: The Dollars and Sense of Growing Food in America tells the story of transitioning a farm from one generation to the next, the difficulties of trying something new, and the personal stress of farming. But it also tells the story of American agriculture, how it works, and doesn't

Plentiful Pantries

Join the University of Illinois Extension on February 25, 2023, from 10:30 a.m.- 1 p.m. at the East Dubuque Library at 122 Wisconsin Ave, East Dubuque, for “Plentiful Pantries.”. During this hands-on program, teens 12- 18 are invited to learn how to make three healthy snacks from items typically found in their cupboards. Participation in this program is a great way to get your teen in the kitchen and learn to make something nutritious for themselves and their younger siblings.

“By training our youth to be involved in making their snacks, we can help them learn basic kitchen skills that will follow them through life. Along with these learned skills, youth will be learning healthy eating habits and how to provide snacks on a limited budget,” says Kelly Lafferty, 4-H Youth Development Educator.

Pre-registration is required. Register by calling the Jo Daviess County Extension Office at 815-858-2273 or visiting go.illinois.edu/jsw. The deadline to register is February 20. This program is free of charge, but space is limited

Business Spotlight

Massbach Ridge Winery

Cultivating the land has run in the Harmston family blood for generations. So it’s no surprise that when founders Peggy & Greg Harmston moved back home to the hills of Massbach, they started their search for what the ridges of their rural land could support.

The start of the vineyard at Massbach Ridge was in 2000, with the Massbach tasting room opening in late 2003. We started with just a few styles of wines and have expanded to over 15 wines. In 2011, our second wine-tasting room was opened in downtown Galena at 117 N. Main St.
