J-School students invited to reception
at Dole Institute
The Dole Institute of Politics has arranged a private reception for J-School students at 6 p.m. Feb. 9 before the start of a 7 p.m. public program featuring Associate Professor Teri Finneman as a panelist. The program, “First Ladies and Power – Influential First Ladies You Might Not Know Much About,” centers on Sarah Polk, Florence Harding and Edith Wilson and the power each wielded. There will be free appetizers catered by Maceli’s, and the intention is that the students will learn about opportunities offered by being a member of the Dole Student Advisory Board (SAB) and that they stay to attend the public program. RESEARCH, PUBLICATIONS & PRESENTATIONS | |
Gerri Berendzen and Lisa McLendon are among the authors of classes in the Poynter Institute’s updated online Certificate in Editing curriculum. The certificate, a partnership with ACES: The Society for Editing, was revamped in the fall of 2022 and relaunched this month. McLendon overhauled the course “Clarity is Key: Making Writing Clean and Concise,” which she originally developed when the certificate launched in 2013. Berendzen reworked and expanded “Fundamentals of Editing,” a course developed in 2013 by McLendon and two ACES colleagues. The certificate is made up of seven self-directed online courses written by experts in editing, grammar and fact-checking.
Associate Professor Teri Finneman has signed a book contract with Routledge for "Reviving Rural News: Transforming the Business Model of Community Journalism in the US and Beyond" with Nick Mathews and Pat Ferrucci. The book will release in 2024.
Associate Professor Mugur Geana has been invited to participate in a workshop Aug. 9-12 on Knowledge Overconfidence at the 12th Triennial Invitational Choice Symposium in Fontainebleau, France. The Choice Symposium provides an opportunity to attend a workshop with a small group of leading scholars discussing a major research question. Each workshop proposal is peer-reviewed, focusing on knowledge overconfidence and its implications for policy, decision-making and public discourse. The session theme was inspired by a paper published in 2022 in Science Advances, which has generated a vibrant online discussion and received significant international coverage. Dr. Geana is a co-author of this paper. The study documents the relationship between knowledge overconfidence and the extremity of counter-scientific-consensus attitudes about controversial issues such as vaccination, climate change and COVID mitigation policies. These results are significant because they suggest needed revisions in how scholars, science communicators and policymakers think about the relation between knowledge and attitudes when it comes to issues like these. The Choice Symposium is organized with support from INSEAD, one of the world's leading and largest graduate business schools, built on the principles of diversity, independence, rigor and entrepreneurial spirit.
A research project led by Associate Professor Mugur Geana on the use of mixed reality for instruction has been covered by KU News. Following the publication, Dr. Geana was invited to present his research to the New York Augmented Reality Group, which is composed of over 2,000 designers, engineers, investors and public members, all passionate about Augmented Reality and its ability to transform the world.
