November is National Diabetes Awareness Month, an opportunity to spotlight the impact of diabetes and the importance of prevention, early detection, and effective management. Diabetes affects millions, leading to serious complications if unmanaged. The two main types of diabetes, Type 1 and Type 2, have distinct causes and characteristics:
**Type 1 Diabetes** is an autoimmune condition, typically diagnosed in children and young adults, where the body’s immune system attacks insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. As a result, those with Type 1 diabetes require insulin therapy to manage blood sugar levels.
**Type 2 Diabetes** is more common and generally develops in adults, though it’s increasingly seen in younger individuals due to lifestyle factors. In Type 2 diabetes, the body becomes resistant to insulin or doesn’t produce enough, often linked to genetics, diet, and physical activity. Lifestyle changes, along with medication or insulin, can help manage this condition.
At WCHC, we emphasize regular screenings, especially for those at higher risk, as well as ongoing support for managing diabetes effectively.

November marks National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month. Alzheimer’s is a progressive neurological disease that impacts memory, thinking, and behavior, leading to significant challenges for both patients and caregivers.
Early detection and diagnosis are essential to planning and managing care effectively. While there is no cure, ongoing research is focused on new treatments and strategies that may slow disease progression and improve quality of life for those affected.
West Cecil Health Center recognizes the importance of community support and resources for patients and families affected by Alzheimer’s. In addition to primary care support, WCHC offers connections to local support networks, guidance on memory care resources, and information on ways to engage with others who are impacted by the disease.
This month, let’s work together to increase understanding, provide support to families, and advance efforts to find effective treatments.

Mental Health Matters
Helping to reduce the stigma surrounding mental health.
National Family Caregivers Month, observed each November, is a time to recognize and honor the millions of individuals who provide unpaid care to family members and loved ones. This month serves not only as a tribute to these caregivers but also as a vital reminder of the mental health challenges they often face. Caregiving can be incredibly rewarding, yet it can also lead to feelings of isolation, stress, and burnout. To support these unsung heroes, various organizations offer resources and programs aimed at improving caregivers' mental well-being. Initiatives may include support groups, educational workshops, and access to mental health professionals who understand the unique pressures of caregiving. Additionally, promoting self-care practices is crucial, encouraging caregivers to prioritize their own health and seek respite when needed.
WCHC Behavioral Health is currently accepting new patients for both in-person and telehealth medication management. We are currently on a waitlist for therapy services and are no longer accepting external referrals. If you, or someone you know, are in need of care, please call the office today at 410-378-9696 to schedule.
