GERMAN THEATRICAL PERFORMANCE TO CELEBRATE THE BIG U,
FEATURES CHARACTERS INSPIRED BY FORMER CREW MEMBERS

Delayed by COVID, Performance Now Planned for September in Bremerhaven
Seven decades after the SS United States' maiden voyage, her legacy continues to live on in the German port city of Bremerhaven, where the Big U made 168 stops during her career.

Prior to the global pandemic, Jens-Erwin Siemssen (pictured left), artistic director at Das Letzte Kleinod, was preparing to stage a theatrical production in tribute to Bremerhaven's old Columbus Terminal, slated to be torn down and refurbished. The show - which has now been resurrected - will highlight America's Flagship, her passengers, and crew.

As part of his research, Siemssen visited the SS United States at her pier in Philadelphia in 2020, and conducted interviews with Conservancy President Susan Gibbs, the late Joe Rota, a former crew member and Conservancy Board member, and the late Joe Muchulsky, also a former crew member and co-chair of the Conservancy's Hampton Roads Chapter. Siemssen was so inspired by Rota's and Muchulsky's unique stories that they have become two of the play's lead characters!

The play will be performed In Bremerhaven during a three-week run in September 2023. A preview production and workshop in Philadelphia this summer are also planned. As the performance date nears, we will be sure to share updates, along with images and video of the performance.

STAY TUNED FOR MORE INFORMATION.
LIFE-LONG SHIP ENTHUSIAST OFFERS HIS "ODE TO THE BIG U"

Michael Plant's Love the SS United States Started at 7 Years Old
As a boy in the 1970s, Michael Plant spent many weekends and summer days at the Highlands Marina, where his uncle was the manager. The New Jersey marina's bar, “The Bitter End,” was a central feature. While Michael and his cousins were only old enough to play there before it opened to the public, the room's nautical collectibles - especially the big framed print of the SS United States - enthralled Michael.

Several decades later, Michael's passion for America's Flagship was rekindled upon seeing an image of her online at her berth in Philadelphia. He was immediately inspired to join the Conservancy and he has become an active supporter since making his first pilgrimage to the ship.

Last year, as part of the Conservancy's 70th Anniversary Writing Contest, Michael wrote "An Ode to the Big U," a poem about America's Flagship, her Blue Riband-winning maiden voyage, and the fight to keep her afloat.

Available to Captain's Quarters supporters, this unique tour will focus on the ship's record-breaking propulsion system, and feature commentary and perspective from several of the ship's foremost marine engineering experts.

This unique tour on March 11 will take guests below the main decks and give visitors a look at the ship's engine rooms, her famed Westinghouse turbine and double reduction gear box sets, which recently gained a lot of attention on social media.

THE BIG U CONTINUES TO INSPIRE...

"During our tour, I I took pictures of a couple who left for their honeymoon from the SS United States that day. Their family got them a tour. They were dancing together in the main ballroom. They all had to leave but I remained and had a great day with a nautical engineer who worked for the Conservancy. He explained every inch of the ship to me. It’s a cherished memory." - Michael Plant, Conservancy supporter
