Dr. Wendy Hesford
Department of English
Dr. Wendy Hesford is a professor in the Department of English and serves as faculty director of the Global Arts + Humanities Discovery Theme. Her research, teaching, and community engagement are geared toward social justice, human rights literacy, and transformative understandings of our historical place in the world. Dr. Hesford's courses are relevant for students across disciplines including English majors and minors, pre-law students, as well as students in International Studies, with minors in Human Rights, and Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies. Popular Culture Studies Minor
The popular culture studies minor provides tools for students to build bridges between the popular, public, and material cultures of their daily lives and the cultures that are the traditional objects of study. The minor requires the completion of 15 hours, which consists of an introductory course; at least one course involving the study of a historical popular culture (pre-1945); at least one course focusing on a popular culture outside majority-U.S. culture; and no more than two film courses. The Washington Academic Internship Program (WAIP) is an experiential program open to Ohio State juniors and seniors of any major. Students spend a semester studying and interning in our nation’s Capital. Students will earn academic credit for their internship, professional development workshops, study tours, a research seminar, and a course on policymaking and public service. Courses required prior to the WAIP semester: Public Affairs 2110: Intro to Public Affairs or Poli Sci 3115: Intro to the Policy Process. Students are encouraged to meet with WAIP staff before submitting their application. Read More

The Arts and Sciences Student Council offers an opportunity for undergraduate arts and sciences majors to be involved, meet with faculty, serve as a student representative, and develop leadership skills. Math and Statistics Course Help
Are you taking a math or statistics course? The Mathematics and Statistics Learning Center (MSLC) provides free tutoring to students in many math and statistics courses. Even if you’re not sure if tutoring is for you, students often use the Center as a place to work on their math and statistics homework with the added benefit of having a tutor around in case a question comes up. They offer drop-in tutoring and one-on-one 30-minute weekly recurring appointments. For more information visit MSLC.

Campus Libraries
Find a quiet study space at one of the many libraries located across campus. Although the Thompson Library is the main university library and centrally located on the Oval, there are many other university libraries located around campus. Have you checked out the Orton Hall library? Bonus tip - in the lobby you can view a 24-foot dinosaur skeleton and in the nearby museum visit "Jeff," a 7-foot partial skeleton of the extinct ground sloth. Information on library locations, hours of operation, availability of computers, printers, copier services, group study rooms, accessibility resources, and coffee and food may be found here.

Global Education Expo

The 2024 Global Education Expo gives students the opportunity to talk one-on-one with global education experts and learn more about the myriad of ways to know and engage the world at Ohio State. Students will be able to explore programs for all majors and learn more about how to fund their prospective experience. Representatives from colleges, units, and departments around campus and the office of Global Education will be present to speak with students about programs offered at Ohio State.

Global Education Funding
Are you planning to study abroad winter break 2024, spring semester 2025, or spring break 2025? Funding opportunities include need-based Keith and Linda Monda International Experiences Scholarships designed for arts and sciences majors who would not normally be able to afford an education abroad and scholarships for students in specific majors. You do not need to be admitted to an education abroad program to apply for these funds, but you do need to know what program you are applying to. Read more and apply here.
A second scholarship application window at the beginning of spring semester supports programs taking place summer and autumn 2025.

Global May Hungary
Explore the rich culture and history of Hungary and Central Europe through first-hand, authentic experiences with the local people and culture. Develop an understanding of the region's history, geography, and politics with dynamic academic programming including multiple walking tours of Budapest, meeting with local people working in politics and media, and visiting culturally important sites such as Orszaghaz (the Parliament Building), picturesque Szentendre, the historic Visegrad Castle, Turkish baths, and the Habsburg crypts. Applications, eligibility requirements, and recommendation forms for the Autumn 2024 Arts and Sciences Undergraduate Research Scholarship (URS) competition are now available. This competition is open to students earning degrees in the College of Arts and Sciences and undertaking a significant research project or thesis. Awards will be announced in December. Eleanor Ruffing McMahon Travel Grants
Undergraduate students who are currently in good standing in the Honors Program in the College of Arts and Sciences (ASC) may apply throughout the year for funds to subsidize their travel to the conferences at which they will gain professional experience or present their work. In general, the amount of the Eleanor Ruffing McMahon Awards will depend on conference and travel expenses, but a $1,000 maximum will govern most awards. Read more and apply.
