Dr. John F. Quinn

presents his 11th lecture for the Museum on September 18 at 6 p.m.

Dr. Grace and Mr. Bennett:

Irish Newport's Gilded Age Leaders

Dr. Philip Grace

James Gordon Bennett, Jr.

Sponsored by Virginia Pittsley

In Memory of Bill Pittsley and Jay Pittsley

Historians of Newport’s Gilded Age have tended to focus on the Vanderbilts, the Astors, and other summer colonists, chronicling their extravagant social lives. However, the Irish

were the largest population in Newport during this era.

Dr. Quinn’s presentation features two men of Irish descent who were prominent figures in Newport’s Gilded Age.

Dr. Philip Grace was a longtime pastor of St. Mary’s Church. James Gordon Bennett, Jr. was the flamboyant and unpredictable publisher of the New York Herald. Dr. Quinn will share how Grace and Bennett’s paths crossed on several occasions.
