First Sunday Brunch

First Sunday Brunch has taken a break over the summer but will resume in October. At this time, we need hosts for October and November.

First Sunday Brunch generally draws around 25 people, though there is a sign-up sheet ahead of time so you can plan. (Teaming up with another host is a great way to keep things easy.)

There is a sign-up sheet on the bulletin board in the narthex.

Juneteenth Committee Gifts Two Local Groups

The Juneteenth Committee Co-Chairs, Terry Edwards and Ella Marshall, presented $600 checks to the Friends of the Harris County Library for their Imagination Library Reading Program, and to St. Nicholas Episcopal Church for their Harris County BackSnacks Outreach Program.

The Juneteenth Celebration was held in Waverly Hall this year. The Program was well attended and included musical and spoken presentations as well as lunch. The Juneteenth Committee is choosing a local charity to support each year. This year the Committee chose the two programs benefiting local children as recipients of proceeds over and above the cost of producing the event; made possible by generous sponsorships.

The Imagination Library provides free books to pre-school children. The BackSnacks Program provides weekend food bags to school children living in food-insecure environments. The Imagination Library and the Harris County BackSnack Programs are so thankful for the generosity of the Juneteenth Committee.

Next year’s Juneteenth Event is being planned by Pine Mountain Volunteers.

Pictured left to right and standing in the Friends Bookstore at the Library are: Rev. Bob Farrow, St Nicholas Episcopal Church; Aleisha McMurtry, HCHS student and St, Nicholas’ School Coordinator for BackSnack Packs; Terry Edwards, Director, Family Connections; Emily Byrd, Vice-President of Friends of Library; and Ella Marshall, President, Waverly Hall Historical Society.

Book Club Chooses Nicked, an Adventure Tale

This new novel by M. T. Anderson is a religious heist set in 1087 featuring a monk and a treasure hunter seeking to steal the relics of St. Nicholas. Just imagine -- It had to be our next read!

Ann Patchett said the book “made me laugh out loud, gasp at the action scenes, and ultimately stole my heart. Anderson’s adult debut handles faith and love with such wit. I’m already pondering a re-read.”

The club members enjoyed The Secret Keeper by Kate Morton and its twist at the end. The next meeting is Wednesday, September 4 following Evening Prayer which starts at 5:00 pm.

Get Ready for that Money Time of Year

It’s not too early to start thinking about next year’s budget! If you are in charge of a committee, program, or project at St. Nicholas, or if you have any community donations you would like St. Nicholas to consider, you’ll need to submit a budget request to the Vestry by November 17. Include a breakdown of your projected expenses during the calendar year for consideration in the 2025 budget.

The website was re-vamped at the beginning of 2024, giving us a clean, new face to present to the greater world. It includes a list of upcoming events (click here to see) and a monthly calendar (click here).

Please take a moment to explore the website, and if you have any suggestions for corrections or updates to the information published on it, contact Erin.
