Featured Cookbook: The ORT of Cooking
In March, we featured "The SpORT of Cooking," published by the Women’s American ORT District IV in 1975.

The Shadyside Chapter of Women's American ORT got to the pun first with "The ORT of Cooking" in 1971.

One of the most interesting parts of this cookbook is its advertising section in the back. It includes ads from long-gone places like Erenrich's Market on Walnut Street and the Waldorf Bakery on Murray Avenue.

Our copy of "The ORT of Cooking" was donated by Roz Sherman.
In honor of the hot weather and the approaching dog days of summer, our featured recipes are pickled fruits.

The stay-at-home orders of recent months have inspired many to return to classic techniques of home cooking. People are getting back to baking, fermenting, and canning.

These three recipes require a bit less effort than shelf-stable preserves, but they still stock the fridge with treats.

And the watermelon rind recipe is a great way to cut down on waste.
The Rauh Jewish Archives is placing a special focus on Jewish cookbooks throughout 2020. If you have an extra copy of a cookbook published by a Jewish individual or a Jewish group in Western Pennsylvania, please contact Eric Lidji at 412-454-6406 or  eslidji@heinzhistorycenter.org .
The Rauh Jewish History Program & Archives was founded in 1988 to collect, preserve, and make accessible the documentary history of Jews and Jewish communities of Western Pennsylvania. You can help the RJHPA continue its work by making a donation that will directly support the work being done in Western Pa.
