November 21, 2024 - Home-grown Saints

From Julie Davis - Lay Minister for Sunday School and Middle School Youth

Greetings Christ Church,

This year our focus in Children’s Formation is on saints and service and it has been a lot of fun– not the least for the opportunities it has provided us to connect with more of all of you in our own corner of the communion of saints. We have watched the kids respond so much to you and the talents you share with them.

Just this fall they’ve met musicians of all kinds, explored leaves, herbs, and veggies with the green team, sung with the choir, sung for all of you on All Saints Day, packed bags with the outreach team, heard the creation story told with loving wonder for the cosmos and the Creator, been told by a real live author that their stories matter, that they too can be writers. And week-in-week out they’ve seen the faithfulness of their teachers, as they build relationships with adult volunteers and with each other.

Beyond children’s formation, a small army of confirmation mentors have assembled again, getting to know our high school youth. Our middle schoolers have talked to a real live artist and real live social justice workers and heard the message that they too can meet God with their minds and creativity and imagination. They too can and already do serve their communities.

I am deeply moved by your willingness to share your time and talents with our children and by the opportunity myself to see the way your interests light you up. I was new to theologian Austin Farrar’s argument for God which Fr. Seth referenced on All Saints day, but the idea that our evidence for God is in the saints of old AND in one another, in his action within our communion of saints, resonates, even in these fractious times.

In the reading I’ve been doing lately I keep running into research - studies show interactions with strangers boost feelings of wellbeing. Studies show a correlation between the more diverse interactions we have each day– from loved ones to colleagues to acquaintances and strangers–the bigger the boost in happiness from those interactions. And more. All of these studies feel like another way of describing the richness we find in each other at church. I am made for community with you, you are made for community with me.

Thank you for being a part of this community together,

Julie Davis

100 Boxes of Cookies! Lets do this!

Cookies, Cookies, Cookies…

Call us dreamers, but the Outreach team thinks we can provide Staff Appreciation Cookie boxes for 100 staff members of Sojourner Family Peace Center. And we committed to it.

This HUGE Effort made possible by YOU!

Contact Meredie Scrivner if you can help. Here are 3 ways:

Sunday, December 8, St. Nicholas Day at both services

St. Nicholas hopes that every person, young and old, will donate some form of pasta to the Food Pantry at All Peoples Church. Boxed or canned pasta, sauce in plastic jars or cans, mac and cheese, Rice a Roni…anything goes! The children will pull the wagons down the aisle with St. Nick in the lead…let’s fill the wagons!

Packets of hand written cards (5 per pack) will be available (with instructions) starting on Sunday, November 24. Look for the packets in the Good Shepherd Room or look for an outreach member handing them out. Cards need to be returned to one of the boxes in the back of the church and the Good Shepherd Room no later than Tuesday, December 17. Great opportunity for kids to help!

Cookies, cookies, cookies!

Please bake and contribute your favorite holiday cookies. Cookies should be moderately sized, not too fragile, and festive. Nuts are okay. (We don’t want to commit to being nut free, with so many bakers) Deliver to the church kitchen on Monday or Tuesday, December 16 or 17. You may bake ahead and freeze them at home. If you are able to commit to this, please email meredith.scrivner@gmail.com to indicate how many cookies you will donate. Or just bring them! We need about 100 dozen and every batch helps!

Holiday Food Bags for All Peoples Church…

if you took a red or green tote bag to fill for All Peoples Christmas distribution,

please return the bag to the red wagon area any time on or before Sunday, December 15.

Holiday Dinner at St. Vincent De Paul…

Make a Christmas dessert for the meal on Monday, December 16. Cakes, cupcakes, pies, and cookies are all great. Please leave in the Christ Church refrigerator no later than Sunday, December 15 and label it SVDP.

Native Seeds

Five Christ Church members shared their native pollinator seeds with the congregations. Besides individual gardens we discovered that there are several area prairie gardens being tended in the parish.

Thank you for the seeds you provide us for the fruits of the spirit. As we plant our packets of seed, may we consider the gifts of the Spirit which we experience from others and what I should do and be to grow the fruits of the Spirit in others.
