September is Suicide Awareness Month, with World Suicide Prevention Day falling on Tuesday, September 10th. Globally, someone takes their own life every 40 seconds. According to the Anne Arundel County Department of Health's 2023 Report of Community Health Indicators, 74 suicide deaths were reported here in 2021, making it one of the top ten causes of death in the county. White males
had the highest rate of suicide deaths in the county (66% of the total),
followed by white females (19%), and Black males (7%).
Learning the risk factors and warning signs for suicide can help save lives. So can talking and listening. Many of us are afraid that mentioning suicide may encourage someone to act, but this is a myth. Asking questions and offering support can bring a sense of connection often missing for those at risk.
Since 1989, September has also been recognized as Recovery Month. Of those adults in the United States who have faced a substance use or mental health condition, 7 out of 10 are in recovery. This month. we recognize those who have worked hard to achieve recovery, along with the friends, family, community and recovery workers who help make a return to health possible.
