Choir Practice change for next week

Halloween falls on Thursday next week (Oct. 31st), SO the choir will practice at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 30th.

As in previous years, the Maplewood-Richmond Heights school district will distribute Thanksgiving boxes for local families. If you would like to sponsor a box or two or three, the price this year is $50, but partial boxes can be purchased, also.

October is Pastor Appreciation Month. Share your appreciation for Pastor Andy! Notecards and supplies can be found in the back of the sanctuary, send an email or a card to the church, or find your own creative way to thank Pastor Andy for all he does for our community and congregation!

Ad Council meeting is this Sunday at 6:30 p.m. As always, anyone is welcome to attend.

A Note from Pastor Andy

On Sunday, October 27, Maplewood UMC will welcome Rev. Jim Bryan as the guest preacher for week two of our “Children of Zion” worship series. Jim is a retired United Methodist Elder in the Missouri Annual Conference, having served churches in Kansas City, Osage Beach, Springfield, and Columbia. He also served as a District Superintendent, a member of the Missouri Delegation to multiple General Conferences, and other conference teams and boards.

A life-long advocate for peace and justice, his preaching centers on the all-inclusive love of God in Jesus Christ. His prophetic voice gives witness to the movement of the Holy Spirit among the “least of these” on the margins of the world. He has a heart for service and mission, and has served on numerous mission teams in a variety of places around the world.

Jim and Caryl have three children, two of whom are United Methodist pastors, one of whom is ME! Yes that’s right, I invited my dad to come preach at Maplewood, and I’m really excited for everyone to meet him! He has had an immeasurable influence on my life, my preaching, and the way I see the world. It is always a joy to hear him preach.

Jim will be preaching on Luke 17:20-24, focusing on the idea that “The Kingdom of God is among you.” Overwhelming difficulties face us every day. How do we find a focus, a moral compass to guide us? The words of Jesus offer an answer: “The kingdom of God is not coming with things that can be observed, nor will they say, ‘Look, here it is!’ or ‘There it is!’ For, in fact, the kingdom of God is among you.”

All are welcome this Sunday for week two of the “Children of Zion” series as we strive to be the church together in these turbulent and difficult times.

Ad Council Proposes New Mission Statement

“Maplewood United Methodist Church creates spaces where people can  have authentic encounters with Christ, discover their Spiritual gifts, and use them for God’s glory.”

At their September meeting, the Administrative Council continued discussing the congregation’s mission. The statement above comes from a sentence on the “I’m New” page of the website. The Council believes it is actually a statement that fittingly describes the mission of the congregation. Please give prayerful consideration to this statement for the next few weeks. If you have any input, please contact an Administrative Council member. The Council will vote on the statement at the November meeting. The proposed statement would replace the current Mission Statement: “Feeding the community - body, mind, heart, and spirit - through the love of Christ.” The official Vision Statement would remain “A community whose body, mind, heart, and spirit are fed through the love of Christ.

Coming in November

Election Night Communion, so go to the polls, then come to the table.

This campaign season has been brutally divisive. Here is a chance to be a part of something different, something better, something more. On election night, Tuesday, November 5, at 7:00 p.m., all are welcome and encouraged to gather in the chapel on the campus of Eden Theological Seminary to worship, and to celebrate the sacrament of Holy Communion together. This service is a collaboration of Maplewood, Unity, and Webster United Methodist Churches, and it is open to all. The unity of the sacrament is stronger than the divisiveness of an election.
